SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Premodern Colloquium. Koryŏ's Economy: Draft Chapter for the Cambridge History of Korea—Koryŏ
DESCRIPTION:I just have a few questions for everyone to consider while reading the draft: (1) What do we mean by \"agrarian economy\"? Can agrarian economies also be cash economies? (2) According to Richard von Glahn\, during the Mongol Yuan dynasty\, \"the attempt to assimilate Mongol institutions with the norms of Chinese imperial governance engendered multiple and conflicting hierarchies rather than bureaucratic order\,\" which resulted in failure to establish a stable fiscal infrastructure. Must \"multiple and conflicting hierarchies\" (which was also present in late Koryŏ Korea) result in fiscal instability? Can we find exceptions to this rule in other historical contexts? (3) More generally\, can we assume that institutional and cultural differences necessarily produce divergent outcomes in economic performance? Or should we consider other factors to explain these divergences?\"
