SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Invented Library of an Invented Disciple: Reimagining the “Johannine” Literature
DESCRIPTION:The Christian Bible contains four texts attributed to a disciple of Jesus named “John”: the Gospel of John and the letters of 1 John\, 2 John\, and 3 John. But what do we know about the origins of these texts? Who really wrote them?\n\nThis presentation argues that these works are a chain of pseudepigrapha—falsely authored works—written by multiple pens over several decades.\n\nThe author of the Gospel invented a disciple of Jesus to serve as the narrator of his text\; the authors of the letters\, in turn\, co-opted this character\, fleshing out so many afterlives for him. This presentation traces this arc\, showing how a single act of disguised authorship inspired a new literary tradition and shaped twenty centuries of Christian culture.\n\nHugo Méndez is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, where he teaches New Testament and early Christianity. He is the author of *The Cult of Stephen in Jerusalem: Inventing a Patron Martyr* (Oxford University Press\, 2022) and co-author of *The New Testament: A Historical Introduction to the Early Christian Writings*\, 8th ed. (Oxford\, 2024).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Joseph and Sally Handleman Lecture Series presents Jessica Watson
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Milestones: A Voyage Around the World\n\nOn Wednesday\, Oct. 9\, please join Sharon F. Matusik\, Edward J. Frey Dean of Business\, for a conversation with Jessica Watson\, the youngest person to sail solo\, nonstop\, and unassisted around the world. At age 16\, Watson spent 210 days at sea navigating some of the world’s most challenging stretches of ocean. Watson’s journey around the world is a testament to resilience. Amid adversity\, she recognized the value of appreciating small victories and acknowledging progress at every step. Her perseverance and grit demonstrate that we all have the power to live our dreams — no matter how small or big they are.\n\nWhile sailing around the world\, Watson filmed a documentary about her experience\, which was later narrated by Sir Richard Branson. Within three months of her return to Australia\, she authored a book titled True Spirit\, which told the story of her voyage. In February of 2024\, a film adaptation of her book was released on Netflix and had over 30 million viewing hours in the first 10 days following its release. Now aged 30\, Watson has completed an MBA\, authored a second book\, and currently works as a management consultant within Deloitte’s Human Capital Practice.\n\n\nOct. 9\, presentation 4-5 pm\, reception to follow \nMichigan Ross Tauber Colloquium\nFree and open to the public - RSVP Required
