SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Writing in \"Academic Style
DESCRIPTION:Whether you are writing a research article\, class assignment\, conference abstract or dissertation\, the words\, grammatical structures\, and organizational patterns you use all signal whether your text sounds “academic.” We will look at features of academic style\, and how these differ across a range of writing that undergraduate and graduate students do. In this workshop we will work on how to make effective stylistic choices for the types of writing you are doing and the academic identity you wish to convey to your readers in various writing contexts. Bring a text you are currently working on for analysis. Please come prepared to participate actively in small group discussions.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Between the Sun and the Sidewalk: Screening\, Q&A\, and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Latine Heritage Month at the University of Michigan with an interactive night of film\, food\, discussion\, and community! Together\, we’ll enjoy a screening of Between the Sun and the Sidewalk\, followed by a Q&A and reception with the documentary’s director\, Helen De Michiel. \n\nBetween the Sun and the Sidewalk follows two fiercely dedicated young Latino political organizers leading a team of new recruits to mobilize their community to support a sugary drink tax. When the state government passes a stealth law to ban all local soda taxes until 2030\, these young activists fearlessly battle the corporate lobbying efforts to block them.\n\nIn their goal to ignite a grassroots movement for health justice\, the young organizers\, Christian and Aurora\, are undaunted. Tested during their fight for local democracy and the right to vote on important issues\, the film’s heroes overcome doubt\, fear\, and powerful resistance as they dare to fight back against the goliath American beverage industry.\n\nThis event is presented by Rackham Graduate School with support from Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA)\, Ginsberg Center\, Puentes\, Turn Up Turnout\, and the Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA). This event is open to all students\, faculty\, and staff as part of Latinx Heritage Month at the University of Michigan.
