SUMMARY:Performance:Nadim Azzam w/ opener Mark Zhu
DESCRIPTION:A blend of hip-hop\, alt rock\, and jazz fusion that uplifts and inspires\n\nYou’ve got to hurt to heal. Through painfully honest self-reflection\, Nadim Azzam addresses depression\, addiction\, and the dysfunctional realities of our times with his songs rooted in hope and connectivity. A singer\, rapper\, and songwriter who makes his own beats and plays multiple instruments on his tracks\, Nadim has spent years evolving to where his music is today.\n\nA symbiosis of programmed drums and organic live instruments creates a warm\, sometimes surreal sonic environment. Smooth keys\, angular guitars\, and lush synth pads swim alongside melodic vocal hooks and bars that waste no time getting straight to the heart of things. The energy is chill\, friendly and open-hearted\, but the songs open up from this unassuming approach into statements of vulnerability and bracing honesty. Nothing is hidden\, and nothing is off-limits. Graceful vocals and smiling lyrical flows reveal a personal truth that’s sometimes almost hard to look at but always comes from a search for real understanding.\n\nMaking songs for the deep-thinkers\, the over-drinkers\, and other sensitive souls\, Nadim faces his own struggles head-on in hopes of offering some sense of solace to anyone else walking similar valleys of their own. These songs seek to remind that there’s more to life\, and that the pain any given individual feels can be transformed from a solitary torment into a vessel of connection.\n\nOpener Mark Zhu (pronounced “Joo”) addresses relationships\, mental health\, and identity with his songs rooted in healing and emotional vulnerability. A Chinese American singer-songwriter\, music producer\, mix engineer\, pianist\, and designer from Ann Arbor\, Mark is making waves at the University of Michigan. There\, he studies computer engineering by day and plays shows by night\, building his career as an aspiring recording and touring artist. As an award-winning pianist who has performed at Carnegie Hall three times\, Mark leverages his classical training to drive his production skills\, blending genres to create piano-driven ballads\, synth-driven R&B\, and fearless pop anthems.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MIDAS - ICPSR Social Data Science Summer Academy
DESCRIPTION:The MIDAS-ICPSR Social Data Science Summer Academy is a week-long hybrid program hosted collaboratively by the Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS) and the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). Designed for both ICPSR members and University of Michigan researchers\, this intensive academy will provide a thorough and practical overview of essential data science techniques and how they can be applied to advance social science research.\n\nLed by globally leading experts in data science and social science\, sessions will be offered simultaneously virtually by Zoom and in-person at the University of Michigan campus. Through lectures\, hands-on workshops\, example applications\, and group discussions\, participants will develop core competencies in areas such as machine learning\, statistical modeling\, data visualization\, textual analysis\, and more.\n\nAdditionally\, instructors will highlight cutting-edge methods like deep learning and neural networks tailored to social science research questions and data. Specific applications covered will align with research interests of participants\, exploring relevant case studies and projects across the social sciences and beyond\, in domains like political science\, sociology\, public health and epidemiology\, communications\, economics\, and more.\n\nFor more information\, please visit the event page at : https://midas.umich.edu/workshops/social-data-sci-academy-24/
