SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Differential Equations Seminar: Stationary and slowly traveling solutions to the free boundary Navier-Stokes equations
DESCRIPTION:The stationary problem for the free boundary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations lies at the confluence of two distinct lines of inquiry in fluid mechanics.  The first views the dynamic problem as an initial value problem.  In this context\, the stationary problem arises naturally as a special type of global-in-time solution with stationary sources of force and stress.  One then expects solutions to the stationary problem to play an essential role in the study of long-time asymptotics or attractors for the dynamic problem.  The second line of inquiry\, which dates back essentially to the beginning of mathematical fluid mechanics\, concerns the search for traveling wave solutions.  In this context\, a huge literature exists for the corresponding inviscid problem\, but progress on the viscous problem was initiated much more recently in the work of the speaker and co-authors.  For technical reasons\, these results were only able to produce traveling solutions with nontrivial wave speed.  In this talk we will discuss the well-posedness theory for the stationary problem and show that the solutions thus obtained lie along a one-parameter family of slowly traveling wave solutions. DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our ongoing Thursday Seminar Series.\n\nAbout this seminar: Stepfanie Aguillon is a broadly-trained evolutionary biologist interested in understanding the process of speciation in nature. Her research integrates genomic sequencing with behavioral ecology and organismal biology to unravel the mechanisms involved in the evolution of reproductive isolation. In particular\, she leverages natural hybridization—interbreeding between distinct taxa—in birds and fish to study mating decisions in action. Stepfanie will discuss her work in northern flickers focused on the evolution of color differences and her work in swordtail fish focused on the genomic consequences of female mate choice decisions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Needs of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the Context of Contemporary Political Processes and Social Modernization Trends
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This lecture will present findings from field research conducted at the Karekin I Educational Center\, Holy Etchmiadzin\, between March and August 2024. The study focused on assessing the needs of Armenian Apostolic Church communities\, both within Armenia and in the diaspora\, in close collaboration with Church leaders. Employing a mixed-methods approach that included a semi-standardized questionnaire survey and group discussions\, the research gathered valuable insights into the perspectives of Armenian Church representatives. The talk will explore how these leaders perceive the Church's role in addressing the needs of their communities and discuss potential strategies for enhancing the Church's responsiveness and effectiveness.\n   \n   Bio: Arthur V. Atanesyan is a professor and head of the Department of Applied Sociology at the Faculty of Sociology of the Yerevan State University of Armenia. His area of research and teaching includes political and military sociology\, conflict communication\, and mass media theories. Dr. Atanesyan served as an OSCE national expert (2012-2014)\, a national consultant for the Council of Europe Project on Human Rights and Women in the Armed Forces (HRWAF\, 2018-2021)\, and a local expert for the 2016-2018 Action Plan on Ensuring Women’s Protection and Equal Opportunities in the Defense Sector in the Republic of Armenia. He volunteered in a monitoring group for the prevention of torture and inhuman treatment (OPCAT) at the Ombudsman’s office of Armenia (2010-2019).
