SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Seminar Seminar Series: Yizhe Zhu\, Visiting Assistant Professor\, University of California\, Irvine. Postdoctoral Researcher\, Collaboration on the Theoretical Foundations of Deep Learning.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The non-backtracking operator\, an asymmetric matrix constructed from an undirected graph\, connects to various aspects of graph theory\, including random walks\, graph zeta functions\, and expander graphs. It has emerged as a powerful tool for analyzing sparse random graphs\, leading to significant advancements with established results for sparse random matrices using this operator. Additionally\, algorithms employing the non-backtracking operator have achieved optimal sample complexity in many low-rank estimation problems. In my talk\, I will present my recent work utilizing the non-backtracking operator\, demonstrating how theoretical elegance drives the design of innovative algorithms through the introduction of asymmetry into data matrices. The discussion will include estimates of the extreme singular values of sparse random matrices and explore data science applications such as hypergraph community detection and tensor completion.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Launch your Startup & Biz Development Career w/ VFA ft. Clara Gustafson
DESCRIPTION:In America\, the impact of entrepreneurship is powerful. Entrepreneurship drives innovation\, economic growth\, social mobility and more\, but it's not accessible to all. Venture For America seeks to change that through our 2 year Fellowship. \n\nThe Venture For America Fellowship ismobilizing the next generation of entrepreneurs and equipping them with experience\, training\, and community to become startup leaders and founders. During the two-year Fellowship\, our Fellows are salaried\, full-time employees at startups or high-growth companies in one of our 13 cities\, working in a range of roles and industries from project management\, ops\, sales\, VC\, UX\, and more\, and engaging in entrepreneurial programming. \n\nDuring this event\, you'll hear from Clara Gustafson\, who is a 2013 Baltimore Alum about her experience as a VFA Fellow\, and her experience working at ZeroFox where she was in the first 10 employees and worked as a Business Development Associate and now - 10 years later - is the Chief Experience Officer enabling hundreds of employees globally. Having developed many roles for the first time from sales development rep to marketing manager and Chief of Staff\, Clara can share what it's like to work in a venture-backed growth tech startup and the entrepreneurial mindsets and skills needed. \n\nThrough VFA\, Fellows find lifelong friends\, an entrepreneurialcommunity\, and a network of individuals to help take their career and ambitions to the next level. In addition to hearing from Clara\, our recruitment team will walk you through how Fellows find their job\, common roles and industries available to Fellows\, plus the programming\, community\, and resources. We'll close out with a Q&A with Clara\, our recruiters and how to apply for our next deadline on Jan. 29\n\nTo apply to Venture For America's 2024 Fellowship class you must be a U.S. citizen\, permanent resident or DACA recipient\, early in your career (completed your undergraduatedegree since 2021)\n\nBy registering for this event\, you agree to be contacted by Venture For America about our marketing or promotional efforts related to the Fellowship.
