SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LCIT: what is inclusive teaching?
DESCRIPTION:Our first meeting will reground us in the question of: \"What is inclusive or equitable teaching anyway?\" Our group has changed since we started in 2018 and I hope it will be helpful to revisit a couple of definitions of what we're here to talk about in the first place.\n\nOne definition comes from CRLT: https://crlt.umich.edu/overview-equity-focused-teaching-michigan (and I found it oft-quoted on other university websites!)\n\nAnother (list of practices) comes from AMS: https://www.ams.org/learning-careers/leaders/inclusive-classrooms\n\nAnd finally\, a linked toolkit from Yale provides both some framework as well as practices: https://poorvucenter.yale.edu/FacultyResources/Diversity-Inclusion \n\nRead what you're able of those resources\, but know that no reading is required to attend!\n\nSome (possible) overarching questions for our meeting will be:\n- what is YOUR definition of inclusive teaching?\n- which\, if any\, of these resources help advance your idea and practice of inclusive teaching? What resources are missing?\n- how do you know if you're \"doing it right\"?

SUMMARY:Exhibition:More than Gray: Reimagining Early America in Full Color
DESCRIPTION:The American past was lived in full color\, but this vibrant history can be easily missed in surviving evidence. You can’t deny that there’s something about a black-and-white photograph that feels… stuffy. With portraits showing people with their shirts buttoned right to the neck and everything in shades of gray and brown\, our imaginations can incline to thinking of the past as a bit staid\, if not downright dull. But look a little closer\, and you’ll see signs that the fashion choices available to those who came before us were more colorful than you might first think. From the fabrics they wore\, to the games they played\, or the books they read\, their world was alive with bright hues. This exhibit invites you to reimagine history with a fuller color palette and picture the vibrancy and joy that just might be hidden behind the unsmiling photographs.\n\nExhibition opening weekdays from 12-4.
