SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Weekly DCMB / CCMB Seminar featuring Jian Ma\, PhD (Carnegie Mellon University)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Despite significant advancements in high-throughput data acquisition in genomics and cell biology\, our understanding of the diverse cell types within the human body remains limited. In particular\, the principles governing intracellular molecular spatial organization and interaction\, as well as cellular spatial organization within complex tissues\, are still largely unclear. A major challenge lies in developing computational methods capable of integrating heterogeneous and multiscale molecular\, cellular\, and tissue information. In this talk\, I will discuss our recent work on creating integrative approaches to advance single-cell epigenomics. These methods hold the potential to reveal new insights into fundamental genome structure\, gene regulation\, and cellular function within complex tissues\, across a wide range of biological contexts in both health and disease.\n\nBio: Jian Ma is the Ray and Stephanie Lane Professor of Computational Biology in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. His lab develops advanced AI/ML methods to explore the structural and functional complexity of the human genome and cellular organization. His work tackles key computational challenges with broad implications for human health and disease. He serves as the Contact PI of a Center grant in the NIH 4D Nucleome Program and Co-Chair of its Steering Committee. His recent work has been supported by the NIH\, NSF\, CZI\, Google\, and the Mark Foundation. He has received several awards\, including an NSF CAREER Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship (in Computer Science)\, and is an elected Fellow of AAAS.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Science Success Series | What's Your Why? Living Your Purpose and Values to Reach Your Goals
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will provide many opportunities for you to reflect on your motivation and purpose and share your goals with a fellow student. We’ll begin this workshop by discussing motivations for attending college and specifically the University of Michigan\, consider our purpose through Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle\, and explore our core values through a Values Sort activity. Lastly\, we’ll tie everything together by discussing how you can use knowledge of self as intrinsic motivation to succeed in college.
