SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:A Fifth Event for Honors in the Arts Winter 2024: Tour of Carhartt Headquarters
DESCRIPTION:A fifth addition to our Honors in the Arts Winter 2024 event series has been confirmed.Join us on Friday\, April 5th\, for a headquarters tour of one Detroit’s oldest\, independent brands\, Carhartt!Founded before the Ford Motor Company\, and some two decades after Vernor’s Ginger Ale\, Carhartt was born in Detroit\, in 1889. Originally founded by Hamilton Carhartt\, the company is still privately owned by his descendants–making it one of the oldest\, family-owned businesses in Michigan.\nThis tour will feature a viewing of Carhartt’s Archive with their Manager Archivist\, Dave J. Moore—a graduate of the University of Michigan—who will lead participants through an extensive 135-year-old collection of garments and products. Attendees will then visit Carhartt’s Design Studio\, where VP Global Product Design\, Ben Ewy—an Honors graduate of the University of Michigan—will give an overview of Carhartt’s product DNA\, empathetic approach to design\, and commitment to making functional garments which stand the test of time. There will be a Q&A following Ben’s presentation.\nOnce registered for this event\, participants should plan to meet on 4/5 at 1:30pm\, at the Perlman Honors Commons\, on the ground floor of Mason Hall. We will arrive back to campus shortly after 6pm.Participation in this event\, followed by a reflection—reflection details to be provided day of the event\, due no later than 4/12—counts as one HIA event. As noted previously\, you must attended at least two HIA events in Winter 2024 to obtain one Sophomore Engagement Point. (Of course\, you are encouraged\, if so inclined\, to attend as many of the HIA events in Winter 2024 as you like.)This event will be capped at 13 participants\, per Carhartt Headquarters' tours and visitations policy.
