SUMMARY:Performance:Kayla Gunderson (University of Chicago) plays the Baird Carillon
DESCRIPTION:Emerging American carillon talent Kayla Gunderson performs a recital including works for children by Jean W. Miller\, the first North American woman to publish her carillon compositions and the first blind woman to ever publish carillon music. Gunderson recently graduated from the Royal Carillon School ‘Jef Denyn’ in Belgium. Originally from Seattle\, she learned to play the carillon at the University of Rochester in New York. She is active as a member of the Professionalism\, Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion Committee of the Guild of Carillonneurs of North America. Beyond carillon\, she is working on obtaining a license in American Sign Language/English interpretation.\n\nSummer carillon concerts are free and open to all\, including to families and their pets. The music happens rain or shine. Please note that concerts are scheduled on both Central and North Campus\, so plan your commute accordingly. When you arrive\, take a program from the stand near the tower and have a seat outdoors wherever you like\, or bring your own lawn chair or blanket (even your own picnic!). Concert staff wearing nametags will be available to answer questions or direct you to accessible restrooms and other facilities. For best acoustics\, sit far enough away from the tower to have a direct line of sight to the bells.\n\nPARKING\nThe nearest municipal parking structures are at 324 Maynard and at 510 E Washington. Street parking may be limited during construction in the vicinity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]
