SUMMARY:Film Screening:The Chinese Mayor
DESCRIPTION:Watch the documentary The Chinese Mayor (2015\, 86 mins.)\, followed by discussion with Hao Zhou\, the film's director\, and Lan Deng\, professor and chair of the Urban and Regional Planning Program in the U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Light refreshments provided.\n\nOnce the thriving capital of Imperial China\, the city of Datong is now among the country’s most polluted cities\, burdened by aging infrastructure and uncertain economic prospects. Mayor Geng Yanbo announces an ambitious plan to restore Datong to the cultural center it was 1\,600 years ago. The plan comes at a devastating cost: thousands of homes will be demolished\, and half a million residents — 30 percent of Datong’s population — will be relocated. The Chinese Mayor offers remarkable access to a leader\, and to a country\, moving urgently toward an increasingly unstable future. It also allows audiences to draw their own conclusions about the promises and costs of the mayor’s project\, while raising questions that continue to echo today.\n\nThe CHOP (China Ongoing Perspectives) film series is sponsored by the U-M Library (Asia Library) and the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Exploring the Mind | Pleasure\, Desire\, and Addiction in the Brain
DESCRIPTION:How is pleasure (‘liking’) different from desire (‘wanting’)\, and how are they generated by the brain? Answering those questions is crucial to understanding addiction\, compulsivity\, and many other aspects of human behavior. Our work at Michigan helped show that the brain’s mesolimbic dopamine system is not a pleasure ‘liking’ mechanism as was once thought\, but rather only a motivational ‘wanting’ mechanism. Separate brain opioid hedonic hotspots generate feelings of ‘liking’.\n\nIn addiction\, drug-induced sensitization of dopamine systems in vulnerable individuals can amplify ‘wanting’ to arguably compulsive levels\, even when what is desired does not provide pleasure once obtained. A recent animal laboratory demonstration is ‘wanting what hurts:’ desiring experiences that give no pleasure at all\, as a prototype of how addictive compulsion works. Incentive sensitization helps explain how addiction can create a vulnerability to relapse that persists despite sincere desire to quit\, even long after drugs are no longer taken.\n\nAbout the speaker: Kent Berridge is James Olds Distinguished University Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Michigan. Research in Berridge’s lab has aimed for better answers to questions such as: How is pleasure (‘liking’) generated by the brain? How is desire (‘wanting’) generated by the brain? How does wanting something differ from liking it? And how does addiction become compulsive?
