SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DeRoy-Graf Lecture: Better Living Through Science: The Extraordinary Post-War Movement That Forever Changed the Way Americans Eat
DESCRIPTION:From SPAM to Jell-O\, cream of mushroom soup casserole to pineapple upside-down cake\, the 20th century saw a radical reinvention of food systems across the country. This is the story of how the domestic scientists\, with a dash of military tech and Madison Avenue\, revolutionized the world\, one home kitchen at a time.\n\nThis lecture will take place on Thursday\, October 8th\, from 5:00pm - 6:00pm\, in the Vandenberg Room\, located on the second floor of the Michigan League.\n\nBio: Diana Hubbell is a two-time James Beard Award-winning journalist with more than a decade of experience covering food\, culture\, and travel. Currently\, she runs the travel section at SAVEUR. \nPreviously\, she was an editor at Atlas Obscura\, where she wrote stories about an island full of very unusual feral pigs\, a utopian hippie cult\, and the long\, weird history of Jell-O meat salads. \n\nYou'll also find her bylines in The Guardian\, The Washington Post\, Condé Nast Traveler\, WIRED\, The Independent\, VICE\, Architectural Digest\, Eater\, Esquire\, AFAR\, Popular Science\, Wine Enthusiast\, Travel + Leisure\, Off Assignment\, and Playboy\, among other publications. \n\nShe lives in Brooklyn\, but has called Berlin and Bangkok home. She has an MA from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism's Arts & Culture program and a BA from Wesleyan University's College of Letters. \n\nThis fall Diana Hubbell is the DeRoy-Graf Memorial Visiting Professor in the LSA Honors Program at the University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Va' Pensiero: Storie ambulanti (Walking Stories) by Dagmawi Yimer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Va' Pensiero: Storie ambulanti (Walking Stories) (2013)\, followed by a conversation and Q&A with Ethiopian-Italian filmmaker Dagmawi Yimer.\n\nA leading voice in migrant cinema in Italy\, Yimer is also a co-founder of the Archivio delle Memorie Migranti\, a collective project dedicated to documenting migration from the perspectives of migrants and preserving their stories as part of Italy's contemporary cultural memory.\n\nVa' Pensiero follows the lives of Senegalese street vendors in Italy while examining anti-Black racism\, migration\, labor\, and everyday forms of exclusion. Beginning with the aftermath of the 2011 racist attack in Florence that killed two Senegalese men\, the film explores how migrant communities negotiate belonging within contemporary Italian society. Through multilingual testimony—including Italian\, Wolof\, and French—and observational documentary practice\, Va' Pensiero challenges conventional narratives of migration by foregrounding the voices and lived experiences of migrants themselves.\n\nThe screening will be followed by a conversation with Yimer about the making of Va' Pensiero\, documentary filmmaking as a form of witnessing and political storytelling\, and the representation of migration and Black life in contemporary Italy.\n\nThe event is part of “Migration\, Memory\, and the Politics of Witnessing: A Residency with Filmmaker Dagmawi Yimer\,” October 7–9\, 2026.
