SUMMARY:Performance:Gershwin Centennial Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Gershwin Centennial Concert will celebrate the achievements of George and Ira Gershwin from 1925. The University Philharmonia Orchestra under Jayce Ogren will perform the rarely heard overture of the musical *Song of the Flame*\, composed by George and Herbert Stothart\, and George's *Concerto in F*\, his most ambitious composition to date and the first of his concert works that he orchestrated himself\, featuring soloist Tzu-Yin Huang. Students from SMTD's exemplary Musical Theatre Department\, accompanied by the Gershwin Initiative's own Jacob Kerzner\, will perform excerpts from the Gershwin Broadway musicals from 1925: *Song of the Flame*\, the only Gershwin collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein II (with co-lyricist Otto Harbach)\, and two of George and Ira's shows\, *Tip-Toes* and *Tell Me More* (the latter with co-lyricist Buddy DeSylva). \n\nThe concert also will have a celebration of Ira\, featuring songs he wrote with Milton Schwarzwald\, Kurt Weill\, and Harold Arlen\, in addition to remarks from Michael Owen\, author of the newly published *Ira Gershwin: A Life in Words*\, the first biography of the more unassuming member of the Gershwin duo. As a bonus\, a rediscovered song from *La\, La\, Lucille*\, George's first musical (written with DeSylva and Arthur Jackson)\, will be performed for the first time in nearly a century.\n\nPresented by the University of Michigan Gershwin Initiative and Marquee Arts\; sponsored by Arbor Brewing and Michigan Medicine.\n\nTickets $27-$52 via marquee-arts.org\nTickets only $8 plus fees for Students (w/Valid ID) in Price Tiers 2\, 3\, & 4

SUMMARY:Performance:The Kombos Collective Concert - Out of Time\, Out of Place: Hellenic Music in Diaspora
DESCRIPTION:Michael Malis (piano)\, Constantine Novotny (baritone)\, and Ellie Falaris Ganelin (flute)\n\nA look at displacement and self-discovery through the eyes of artists in the diaspora. Hellenic-American artists Michael Malis\, Constantine Novotny\, and Ellie Falaris Ganelin explore these concepts through the convergence of music and poetry. The cornerstone of the program is Malis’s original song cycle\, \"Another Shore\, Another Country\,\" set to the poetry of C.P. Cavafy\, commissioned by ProMusica Detroit and premiered in February 2024. Cavafy\, who lived most of his life in Alexandria\, Egypt\, is the quintessential voice of the Greek diaspora and a prominent figure among 20th-century poets. \n\nThrough Ganelin’s and Malis’s own arrangements\, the trio performs songs of love and longing by Greek idols Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hadjiadikis. These masterful colleagues born the same year (1925) each brought a new vision and prominence to Hellenic music through the radio in their homeland and in film worldwide. Rounding out the program is Malis’s solo piano work\, Hold Tightly Your Vision of How Things Could Be\, exploring his precarious sense of belonging between two worlds as the descendant of Greek immigrants living in America.
