SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Department of Astronomy 2024-2025 Colloquium Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:\"Unveiling Complex Kinematics of Hot Gas in Galaxy Clusters with XRISM\"\n\nThe recent launch of the XRISM observatory has opened a new era of high-energy astrophysics. Resolve\, the primary instrument on XRISM\, provides high-resolution (~5 eV) X-ray spectra of various X-ray sources\, including extended sources like galaxy clusters. This capability enables direct kinematic mapping of hot gas in many galaxy clusters for the first time. In this talk\, I will highlight some of the results from observations of galaxy clusters taken during the first year of the mission. In particular\, I will discuss a “double-cascade” of velocities found in the core of the Perseus cluster\, stormy weather of the Coma cluster and unusual properties of the velocity power spectrum\, gas kinematic properties in a relaxed cluster A2029 out to cosmologically interesting radii\, among other exciting results.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:2025 Leadership Crisis Challenge
DESCRIPTION:The application window for the 2025 Leadership Crisis Challenge opens on Wednesday\, January 8!\n\nABOUT\nLeadership Crisis Challenge (LCC) is a premier action-based learning experience that immerses participants in a simulated business and media crisis\, powered by the Sanger Leadership Center at Michigan Ross. Students play the part of executives responding to the issues as they unfold\, while leveraging the expertise of communication coaches\, faculty\, and a board of directors made up of esteemed U-M alumni\, to prepare for a press conference attended by real members of the media.\n\nLCC is open to ALL U-M students. There are two levels of competition—graduate and undergraduate. Two undergraduate teams and two graduate teams will receive a scholarship\, split among participants. In addition to the competition\, there will be educational workshops\, a networking session\, and access to the Big House field.\n\nDon't miss out on this amazing\, one-of-a-kind opportunity! Apply by January 22.\n\nAGENDA \nThursday\, January 30\, approx. 4–10 PM\nMichigan Ross\n\nFriday\, January 31\, approx. 9 AM–5 PM\nJack Roth Stadium Club at Michigan Stadium\n • Boardroom Presentation: Teams will be assigned a 55-minute window to present to\, and receive feedback from\, a board of directors in the morning or early afternoon\n • Press Conference: The final round of competition begins at 3 PM and ends by 5 PM\nSee the full agenda on our website. \n\nTIME COMMITMENT\nApproximately 10 hours over 2 days\n\nQuestions? Email Sanger at rossleaders@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Bodily Responses to Conflict and Techniques to Soothe the Nervous System
DESCRIPTION:This introductory workshop will explore how the body reacts to conflict and disagreement in discussions and dialogues. Participants will gain an understanding of these physiological responses and learn practical techniques to calm their own nervous systems. For those in facilitator roles\, the workshop will also cover strategies to help soothe the nervous systems of others during challenging discussions.\n\n- Audience: U-M only (students\, faculty and staff)\n- Level: Introductory\n- Facilitator(s): Jacob Foster\n\nABOUT DIFFICULT DIALOGUES\nDifficult Dialogues Meet the Moment Initiative is made possible though partnership between LSA Undergraduate Education\; Division of Student Life\; U-M Year of Democracy\, Civic Empowerment\, and Global Engagement\; Stephen M. Ross School of Business\; Raoul Wallenberg Institute\; The Program on Intergroup Relations\; and Difficult Dialogues National Resource Center. Find workshops\, coaching\, and more at myumi.ch/difficult-dialogues.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:CANCELLED Behind the Scenes: MEC’s Impact on Schools
DESCRIPTION:Curious about what it’s like to work in a school with Michigan Education Corps? Join our internal coach and team member(s) for an in-depth look at the daily experiences of our members and the significant impact they have on students. Our discussion will cover a typical day in the life of an MEC member\, highlighting the various tasks and responsibilities they undertake. We will also address common misconceptions about working in schools and how the reality often differs. Our panelists will share their initial expectations and how their experiences have shaped their understanding of the role. Additionally\, we will discuss the challenges our members face and the strategies they use to overcome them. Managing classroom behaviors\, scheduling interventions\, and communicating with teachersare all part of the job. Our panelists will share their tips and techniques for handling these challenges! At the end of this session\, you will beable to ask questions to the members and internal coach.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DE Seminar: On the traveling and stationary wave problems for a system of viscous shallow water equations
DESCRIPTION:There is a rich history of the study of traveling wave solutions to the free boundary Euler equations \n- otherwise known as the water wave problem\; nevertheless\, it is only within the last six years\nthat the analogous study of traveling wave solutions to free boundary fluids with viscosity - such\nas the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations - has commenced. Even more recently\, this traveling\nwave study has expanded to a larger family of dissipative fluid systems including compressible flows\,\nfluids obeying Darcy’s law\, and the shallow water equations.\nThis talk focuses specifically on the shallow water equation’s version of the water wave problem.\nThe shallow water equations\, which are derived from the free boundary Navier-Stokes equations\nwith Navier slip boundary conditions via a rescaling\, asymptotic expansion\, and depth-averaging\nprocedure\, are both mathematically and computationally important. For these equations we shall\ndiscuss three recent results: (1) the traveling wave problem and the limits of vanishing viscosity\nand capillarity\, (2) the existence of families of two-dimensional roll wave solutions\, and (3) the\nstationary wave problem with variable bathymetry and the nature of large solutions.\nThese theorems are unified by the fact the main engine of their proofs is the implicit function\ntheorem\, although each result utilizes a different manifestation. These are a Nash-Moser variant\nto handle derivative loss\, a multiparameter bifurcation theorem\, and an analytic global implicit\nfunction theorem.
