SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quantum Research Institute | Unleashing Analog Quantum Computing
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: In the Meeting Invite\nIn-Person: Michigan Memorial Phoenix Project\, 2301 Bonisteel Blvd\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109\, USA\, Room 2000\n\nAbstract: Recent advances are expanding the power and flexibility of analog quantum platforms\, opening new routes for both quantum simulation and quantum information science. In this talk\, I will discuss how modest levels of control can be used to access key observables and dynamical regimes in strongly correlated fermionic systems\, including settings with pairing\, long-range interactions\, and cooling. I will also describe how globally controlled analog platforms can nevertheless achieve universal quantum computation\, and how optimal-control techniques can be used to engineer complex effective interactions and topological dynamics. Finally\, I will outline recent progress toward approximate error correction tailored to analog quantum systems. Together\, these developments point toward a broader view of analog quantum computing\, in which large-scale quantum devices are not only simulators of specific models\, but flexible computational resources whose capabilities can be systematically unlocked.\n\nBio\nSusanne Yelin's research interests are in theoretical quantum optics and quantum information science. Current research directions include quantum control of ultracold polar molecules\, investigation of novel coherence-based optical elements\, single-photon nonlinear optics using dipolar systems\, coherent metamaterials and negative refractivity\, coherent control in condensed matter systems\, and superradiance.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Fill the Ranks”: The Civil War and the University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:“Fill the Ranks”: The Civil War and the University of Michigan explores how campus and community debated the issues that tore the country apart\, how students and alums joined the fight\, and how the University’s public mission began to conflict with its elite aspirations. Based on collections at the Bentley Historical Library.\n\nDeveloped by the Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory and featuring the work of its student docents\, “Fill the Ranks” includes historic artifacts\, digital animations\, and interactive elements spanning two floors.\n\nOn display September 25\, 2026-July 2\, 2027 at the Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory\, 1398 Ann Street\, Ann Arbor\, 48109.\n\nView the exhibit during the Observatory’s open hours: Thursdays 12-5 pm\, Fridays 12-11 pm\, Saturdays 12-5 pm.\n\n“Fill the Ranks”: The Civil War and the University of Michigan is supported in part by the Inclusive History Project. SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.
