SUMMARY:Social / Informal Gathering:QMSS Winter 2025 Welcome (Back) Lunch with Family Feud Trivia!
DESCRIPTION:Join the Quantitative Methods in the Social Science (QMSS) program for a fun welcome back for the Winter 2025 semester in the form of a casual\, trivia-style Family Feud game day! First participate by completing this survey full of fun questions about being a college student at the University of Michigan: https://myumi.ch/7Pg3x. Then\, join us for free food\, music\, and a chance to win some Michigan-themed prizes with friends and peers at your tables in a casual\, trivia-style version of Family Feud!\n\nThis version of Family Feud is a little different from the classic game show with Steve Harvey. In our event\, we will drop questions off at your tables\, and all tables can work together to come up with what YOU think the most popular answers from the survey were. Then\, you'll submit your responses to our host\, and points will be awarded to teams who guess the responses in their correct order. The team(s) with the most points by the end of all rounds will get a chance to win U-M-branded gear! Fun\, easy\, and a great way to get to know your QMSS community over free food!\n\nThis event is open to all U-M students\, regardless of their affiliation with QMSS! Please feel free to share this event with your friends - we simply ask that you RSVP by Tuesday\, January 28th so we can get a proper estimate for our food and prize orders!\n\nIf you have any questions\, please don't hesitate to reach out to Caitlin at qmss.program@umich.edu! Can't wait to see you there!

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:(Categorical) noncommutative algebraic geometry
DESCRIPTION:The phrase “noncommutative geometry” is\, unfortunately\, fairly overloaded. Here I will present one notion of noncommutative algebraic geometry\, where we view (triangulated) categories as geometric objects in their own right. These arise most frequently as categories of sheaves of modules on ordinary varieties\, but I will mention some examples that appear in the wild which are not of this type.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Ballistic transport for limit-periodic and partially periodic Schrödinger operators
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this talk\, we will provide a short introduction to quantum dynamics and introduce the notion of ballistic transport\, a measure of wave packet spread. We will then present some results showing ballistic transport for one dimensional continuum Schrödinger operators with limit-periodic potentials\, as well as \"directional ballistic transport\" for higher dimensional discrete and continuum Schrödinger operators with potentials supported\, and periodic\, on a strip. This talk contains joint work with Adam Black\, David Damanik\, and Tal Malinovitch.\n\nContact: Peter Miller
