SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Recognizing Racism in Everyday Life
DESCRIPTION:\nDuring this workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn terms associated with racism/anti-racism as well as power and oppression and their impact in the global and U.S. context. Additionally\, participants will be able to recognize microaggressions and stereotyping that we see portrayed in media and then be able to practice responding to real-life incidents of bias and racism that may occur in school\, in the workplace\, or in the community.\nLearning Objectives:\n\nGain knowledge of terms associated with racism\, anti-racism\, power\, and oppression.\nGain the ability to identify incidents of bias in the media and real-life scenarios.\nPractice responding to microaggressions or incidents of bias that may occur in our everyday lives.\n\nThis workshop fulfills the anti-racism requirement for Rackham’s DEI certificate program.\nThis workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. DESCRIPTION:“Dawes is jaw dropping” –Guitar Player Magazine\n\nMike Dawes is an English guitarist known for composing\, arranging\, and performing multiple parts simultaneously on a single guitar. He is regarded as one of the world’s most creative modern fingerstyle guitarists\, with a repertoire spanning original viral videos and popular arrangements\, alongside mainstream chart success performing with Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues.\n\nDawes was named ‘Best Acoustic Guitarist in the World’ two years in a row (2017 & 2018) by Total Guitar Magazine & MusicRadar reader polls\, with numerous 2nd place rankings in the preceding years.\n\nHis reputation has invited him opportunities to collaborate with GRAMMY Award-winning artists such as Tommy Emmanuel\, with whom he recorded the duet record ‘Accomplice Vol. 3\,’ and the GRAMMY-nominated metal band Periphery\, with whom Mike joined on their 2024 double single release.\n\nDawes also has a strong reputation as an educator\, acting as a columnist for Guitar World and Acoustic Guitar magazines\, as well as teaching guitar masterclasses all over the world\, creating apps\, publishing degree-level literature\, appearing as a TV judge on SKY TV’s ‘Guitar Star\,’ and more.\n\nMike’s passion\, however\, is performing. SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.
