SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:A Coordination Chemistry Approach to the Design of Boron-Doped Conjugated π-Electron Materials
DESCRIPTION:The incorporation of boron into conjugated organic molecules has emerged as a useful strategy to elicit valuable optical and electronic properties which cannot be observed with the analogous all-hydrocarbon systems. Therefore\, these types of molecules are currently being studied for various optoelectronic applications\, including organic light-emitting diodes. We have synthesized\, structurally characterized\, and assessed the aromaticity and optical properties of unusual borafluorene and borepin cations\, radicals\, and anions. Our primary goal has been to isolate molecules in rare electronic states and to provide a link between structure and function. We have now initiated efforts aimed at understanding the chemical reactivity of these boron-containing rings\, including their reactivity with energy-relevant small molecules. Recently\, we discovered that borenium ions can be tailored such that the serve as viable stimuli-responsive materials\, possessing thermochromic and/or luminescent properties. This lecture will cover our most recent results in these research areas\, including new studies on boraacenes and π-extended multi-boron-doped systems. If time permits\, other research areas will be discussed\, such as our efforts in heavy group 15 element bond activation chemistry.

DESCRIPTION:The William L. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:The Detroit Observatory was once a hub of astronomical discovery that put the University of Michigan on the map as a world-class research institution. A century later\, it was an abandoned building with an uncertain future. From cornerstone to keystone\, from the first director to the people who saved it from destruction\, explore the life of a historic observatory 170 years in the making.\n\n\"Watcher of the Sky\" is being developed by student docents at the Detroit Observatory. They are currently collaborating with a museum design firm on the final version of the exhibit\, which will debut in fall 2025. SUMMARY:Presentation:Increasing Practicality of Quasi-Direct Drive Robotic Prosthetic Legs through Control and Design Optimization
DESCRIPTION:Chair: Robert D. Gregg\n\nZoom Link: \nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/95234083146\n\nAbstract: \nConventional passive microprocessor-controlled knee and ankle prostheses improve lower-limb amputee mobility and quality of life through their simple hand-tuned control and lightweight mechanical design. However\, these devices are unable to perform positive work at the knee\, limiting the ability of the user to perform activities like walking\, stair ascent\, and sit-to-stand. Powered prosthetic devices can address these limitations by providing controlled positive work at the joint and allowing for active control of joint position\, reducing compensatory behaviors and opening up the door to biomimetic control approaches. Despite these benefits\, powered prostheses are not ubiquitous due to weight\, ergonomics\, and cost\, as well as the lack of control architectures that reduce the need for user-specific tuning and give a sense of volition.\n\nIn this presentation\, I focus on overcoming these limitations to the design and control of transfemoral prostheses through the development of data-driven\, indirect-volitional controllers for stair locomotion and stair-walk transitions\, and the design optimization and implementation of a light-weight\, highly backdriveable knee prosthesis. Through this work\, I successfully unify a field-leading hybrid kinematic impedance control framework across multiple activities of daily living. I also construct and validate a quasi-direct drive knee prosthesis\, weighing ~100 grams less than the leading consumer powered knee prosthesis with double the torque-density.\n\nBy creating data-driven\, indirect-volitional control paradigms that can achieve biomimetic biomechanics for multiple activities of daily living\, and developing a light-weight\, quasi-direct drive knee prosthesis capable of biomimetic biomechanics\, I aim to showcase the benefits and potential of fully-powered prostheses\, breaking down the barriers to their real-world use.
