SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Charles Margossian\, Postdoctoral Research Fellow\, Computational Mathematics\, Flatiron Institute
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Probabilistic models describe complex data generating processes and have been applied to a broad range of fields\, such as epidemiology\, pharmacology\, and astrophysics. Inference for probabilistic models poses significant computational challenges\, particularly as models grow in complexity and datasets increase in size. Modern hardware\, with its parallelization capabilities\, offers new opportunities to accelerate statistical inference. However\, many traditional methods are not inherently designed for parallel computation. Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC)\, for instance\, typically relies on a few long-running chains. I propose an alternative approach: running hundreds or thousands of shorter chains in parallel. To support this paradigm\, I introduce the nested “R-hat\,” a novel convergence diagnostic tailored for the many-short-chains regime\, paving the way for faster and more automated MCMC. \n\nNext I examine variational inference (VI). VI already leverages the parallelization capacities of modern hardware\, however it lacks the theoretical guarantees of MCMC and other statistical methods. I present two key theoretical results: (1) a positive result demonstrating that VI can effectively learn symmetries even under misspecified approximations\, and (2) a negative result revealing that factorized (or mean-field) approximations lead to an impossibility theorem\, preventing the simultaneous estimation of multiple measures of uncertainty . These findings provide practical guidance for selecting VI’s objective function and approximation family\, offering a path toward robust and scalable inference.\n\nhttps://charlesm93.github.io/

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Foundations of Community Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Foundations of Community Engagement is an interactive workshop that introduces principles and practices of equitable\, ethical community engagement. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of what the term “community engagement” means\, as well as the many forms it might take - from research and course-based projects to philanthropy\, activism\, policy\, and direct service. Across all these forms of engagement\, participants will learn concepts and actions that promote equitable partnerships\, center community-defined priorities\, and disrupt entrenched power dynamics between universities and community members. Participants will also discuss real-world community engagement scenarios that ask them to apply what they’ve learned in the workshop to various situations.\n\n**This workshop is an updated version of Ginsberg’s long-standing Entering\, Engaging\, and Exiting (E3) session. If you’ve attended that session in the past\, you’ll gain additional knowledge from this session.**\n\nRegister for a Session Here: https://sessions.studentlife.umich.edu/track/event/16509

SUMMARY:Performance:Adam Lenhart & Joe Antrim\, carillon
DESCRIPTION:Adam Lenhart and Joe Antrim perform on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds. As part of Lenhart's American Women Concert Series\, this recital program celebrates the life\, legacy & music of Etta James (1938-2012).\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to  visit the Lurie Carillon.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Building the Bag
DESCRIPTION:How to Flourish is a series of workshops hosted by Trotter Multicultural Center to help incoming undergraduate and graduate students “flourish” by exploring the different dimensions of the Wolverine Wellness Wheel. Using the Wellness Wheel model developed by the University Health Service's Wolverine Wellness program\, we discuss the importance of holistic well-being while acknowledging how a student’s identity\, culture\, and heritage can affect their wellness experience. In this Flourish workshop hosted by Trotter Multicultural Center participants will explore the inequities communities of color face when it comes to financial wellness and how they can start cultivating generational wealth. Trotter Multicultural Center will pair up with Teach for America on how students can start becoming financially astute and helping their future selves building and giving back to their communities through financial resources and tools.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT SERIES: #4 Caring for Your$elf
DESCRIPTION:Dinner provided! Registration is required for food planning purposes.\n\nTuesdays 1/14 - 2/11. Order to take workshops:\n\n1 – Your Money Story\n2 – Making Confident Financial Decisions\n3 – Ultimate Financial Wellness\n4 – Caring for Your$elf\n5 – Be The Boss of Your Finances\n\nBudgets\, interest rates\, and credit scores sound dry\, boring\, and a little overwhelming? You’re not imagining it. Most financial literacy content focuses on the dollars and cents and omits the very real emotional\, psychological\, and systemic reasons money stuff feels so dull. But? It’s good stuff to know\, and we rarely get the opportunity to learn about it in a shame-free space where every question is valued and honored. In this interactive workshop\, you’ll learn why traditional budgeting doesn’t work\, understand some of the personal finance terms you’re bound to come across\, and learn how to make meaningful financial goals.\n\nRSVP for other workshops in the series here: https://myumi.ch/wlwGv
