DESCRIPTION:Album release concert!\n\n“Exalting love for the planet and its fellow human beings as his main value\, the warm and emotional North American artist Joe Reilly captivates us in an atmosphere of blues\, folk\, and rock where his baritone voice invites us to leave aside prejudice and hatred\, preserving the power of love and individuality.\n\nAs the world becomes more complex and darker\, with rising rates of violence\, intolerance\, and racism\, as well as anxiety and suicide\, human beings seek new alternatives to convey positive and encouraging messages to their fellow human beings. This is why an artist like Joe Reilly seeks to combine his ordinary work activities with music\, as an activist who\, through his music\, seeks to uplift the spirits of all who listen.” ~Cosmonauta Radio\n\nLearn to Love Again is Joe Reilly’s first non-children’s album in over a decade. Appropriate for all ages\, the album shares the depths of Joe’s spiritual journey of healing and transformation. The first two singles\, Day of Peace (released 1-1-25) and Infinite Hearts - Decolonization Mix (released 2-17-25) are two examples that show the musical and lyrical diversity of the album. \n\nRecorded on the Frog Holler Farm in Brooklyn\, Michigan underneath the summer solstice full moon\, the album features Joe’s band\, The Community Gardeners: Billy King (guitars and piano)\, John Driscoll (drums and vocals)\, Jenny Jones (vocals)\, Lesley-Anne Stone (vocals)\, Chris Good (bass)\, Mark Stone (percussion)\, Chris DiMeglio (trumpet)\, Glen Michael Blair (keyboard)\, as well as guest artists Born I (vocals)\, and Peace Be Free (vocals).\n\nThis special album release concert will include a guided meditation from Dharma teacher Barbara Newell\, who has been a spiritual mentor of Joe’s for many years and who led Joe and The Community Gardeners in guided meditations during the recording process. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. The rainbow has had many different cultural interpretations over the years\, and most recently has become synonymous with gay pride\, appearing all over each June.\n\nHatcher Gallery Exhibit Room Hours:\nSunday\, 2-8pm\nMonday-Thursday\, 9am-8pm\nFriday\, 9am-4pm\nSaturday\, 11am-5pm
