SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Before You Post That Global Health Photo
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, people return from global health experiences like research trips\, clinical experiences\, and service work abroad\, with hundreds of photos on their phones. But how much thought are we giving to the ethics behind the images we take and share? Who is being represented? Who gets to tell the story? And how can photography unintentionally reinforce harmful stereotypes\, power imbalances\, or “othering\,” even when our intentions are good?\n\nJoin the Global REACH Student Advisory Board for a workshop with Dr. Sonya de Laat\, a scholar\, photographer\, and educator at McMaster University’s Mary Heersink School of Global Health and Social Medicine\, whose work explores the intersections of photography\, ethics\, humanitarianism\, and global health. Holding both an MA in Anthropology and a PhD in Media Studies\, her research examines how images shape public perceptions of suffering\, humanitarian action\, and social responsibility\, with a particular focus on the ethical implications of representation and storytelling in humanitarian settings. She also serves as Research Coordinator for the Humanitarian Health Ethics Research Group at McMaster University\, where she contributes to interdisciplinary research on ethics in humanitarian and global health practices. \n\nThis session is intended for students\, residents\, clinicians\, researchers\, and anyone involved in global health\, international education\, advocacy\, and/or visual storytelling! Whether you have taken photos during a global health experience\, shared images or videos online\, or simply questioned what ethical storytelling should look like in practice\, this workshop will encourage participants to think more critically about the responsibilities that come with documenting the lives of others.

SUMMARY:Social / Informal Gathering:UMS Summer Sings
DESCRIPTION:The UMS Choral Union invites you to take part in the return of Summer Sings. Just come as you are to this no-audition\, no-performance evening of memorable music-making!\n\nAs many as 250 singers from southeastern Michigan\, northern Ohio\, and Canada have joined each session in singing through great choral repertoire with some of the nation’s most respected choral conductors and outstanding soloists. We rehearse portions of the score during the first half\, break for refreshments\, and then re-convene to sing through the entire work. This Summer Sings will feature the opportunity to join community members in singing Part 1 of Mendelssohn's \"Elijah\,\" in English. \n\nSummer Sings costs $5.00 paid at the door (cash only). Please arrive early at 6:30 pm for registration. \n\nPlease note: Due to construction around Hill Auditorium and the closure of E Washington St for the Ann Arbor Summer Festival\, we are unable to load in bleachers for the Hill stage as there is not enough room for a semi-truck to deliver them. As a result\, this year’s Hill Auditorium Summer Sings will have the singers seated in the audience instead of on the Hill Auditorium stage.
