SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning Seminar in Algebraic Combinatorics
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will introduce the completely packed loop models (CPL) as a “transition diagram” between two link patterns. We will see a connection between the weighted counting of such transition diagrams and the transfer matrix of six vertex models with twisted periodic boundary conditions. I will also present a Markov chain model on linking patterns by sampling semi-infinite cylindrical tilings of independent Bernoulli CPL plaquettes. If time permits\, I will discuss the Razumov-Stroganov conjecture that attempts to give an explicit combinatorial description of this probability distribution via six vertex models with domain wall boundary conditions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student DGT: The Fundamental Theorem of Morse Theory
DESCRIPTION:Morse Theory lets us use tools of calculus to understand the topology of a manifold. We will introduce the basic ideas and motivations of Morse theory\, explaining how the homotopy type of a manifold M is determined by nondegenerate critical points of a function f on M. We then apply these tools to the energy functional\, allowing us to determine the homotopy type of the path space of a complete Riemannian manifold. Milnor calls this “The Fundamental Theorem of Morse Theory”\; as time allows\, we will sketch the proof.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:UM-AMDP Info Session: Fall 2027 Admissions Cycle
DESCRIPTION:Are you a current University of Michigan undergraduate student interested in earning a master’s degree from the U-M School of Information on an accelerated timeline?\nThe U-M Accelerated Master’s Degree Program (UM-AMDP) offers eligible U-M students a reduced-credit pathway to a UMSI master’s degree. Rather than completing the standard 48 credits\, UM-AMDP students complete 39 credits\, which may allow them to graduate in as little as 1.5 years—or three semesters.\nJoin one of our virtual UM-AMDP Information Sessions to learn how you can continue your education at Michigan and deepen your expertise in the information field.\nEach session includes:\n\nAn introduction to the UM-AMDP and an overview of the curriculum \nInformation about eligibility\, application requirements\, and deadlines \nDetails about the reduced-credit pathway and expected timeline \nLive Q&A with a member of the UMSI admissions team\n\nWhether you’re beginning to explore your options or preparing to apply\, this session will help you understand the program and determine whether the UM-AMDP is the right next step for you.
