SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EIHS Workshop: Environments\, Empire\, and More-than-Human Histories
DESCRIPTION:The “environment” is often treated as the background against which human histories unfold: a passive setting for state formation\, migration\, violence\, and social change. Samuel Dolbee’s work challenges this assumption by asking us to consider how borders\, disease\, landscapes\, and ecological systems actively shape the histories of empire and everyday life. In his work \, Dolbee shows how environmental forces were not merely acted upon by states and empires\, but became entangled in the making of borders\, regimes of control\, and imperial knowledge.\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.
