SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | What is the simplest holographic matrix model?
DESCRIPTION:I’ll talk about a Hermitian two matrix model called the Hoppe model\, which has an interesting strong coupling limit where the matrices commute with each other. Furthermore\, there exists an emergent area preserving diffeomorphism symmetry of this model at strong coupling\, which allows us to completely solve it at leading order. The solution for all n-point connected correlators takes the form of a Witten diagram-like expansion in an emergent two-dimensional spacetime. I’ll also briefly talk about commuting strong coupling limits in more general multi-matrix integrals\, including supersymmetric ones. The talk will be based on https://arxiv.org/pdf/2608.14781 and https://arxiv.org/pdf/2607.21593.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Make it Accessible: Video and Audio Content
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will cover key concepts and best practices for creating and sharing accessible video and audio content. Participants will learn the differences between open captions\, closed captions\, subtitles\, and transcripts\, as well as how each supports people with a range of disabilities and access needs. We will also explore how to incorporate effective audio description into presentations\, recorded video content\, and social media\, helping ensure that multimedia materials are more inclusive\, usable\, and accessible to all audiences.\n\nAmerican Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services and Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) captioning services will be provided. If you need additional accommodations to participate in this webinar\, please email the ADA Coordinator at ADAcoordinator@umich.edu.
