DESCRIPTION:This workshop is open to all graduate students seeking guidance on cover letters and resumes for positions beyond tenure track roles. It also meets the needs of those applying for internships\, including those applying to the Rackham Doctoral Intern Fellowship Program. The process of synthesizing your academic experiences into strong application materials for jobs and internships beyond academia can be challenging but rewarding. This workshop is a hands-on opportunity for graduate students to learn how to effectively develop a resume using the foundation that they have laid with information from their CVs. Additionally\, this session will include tips for writing compelling\, tailored cover letters and thinking strategically about how these two documents complement each other. This workshop is designed for master's students\, doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Network Complementarities in Maritime Trade Infrastructure: Evidence from the Philippines
DESCRIPTION:This paper tests for network complementarities in port infrastructure by examining whether Roll-On Roll-Off (RORO) upgrades at Fillipino ports generate bilateral trade gains beyond the sum of individual port effects. Using port-to-port commodity flow data\, I find that routes where both ports have RORO trade 23% more than predicted by the individual effects alone. I also propose an interaction event study to investigate the dynamic effects and find evidence that these effects show zero pretrends and have positive dynamic effects. I embed these estimates in an Eaton-Kortum model with island geography and show that complementarity generates a superadditivity premium\, implying coordinated port investments dominate sequential upgrades.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.
