SUMMARY:Film Screening:Tales of the Maya Skies
DESCRIPTION:Tales of the Maya Skies immerses viewers in the wonders of Maya science\, cosmology and myth. This beautifully illustrated story takes us back in time to the jungles of Mexico to discover how Maya scholars developed a sophisticated understanding of astronomy\, architecture\, and mathematics that enabled them to predict solstices\, solar eclipses\, weather patterns and planetary movements.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Robust Properties of Economies with Endogenous Production Networks (joint with Simone Cerreia-Vioglio\, Roberto Corrao\, and Joel Flynn)
DESCRIPTION:We characterize equilibria in a canonical class of economies with endogenous production networks\, showing that log-prices equal a min-max over networks of a primitive affine function of log-productivities. This formula captures how resilience and fragility interact: the “min” reflects resilience from substituting suppliers\, while the “max” reflects fragility from complementarity-induced rigidity. Applying these results\, we generalize Hulten's theorem\, finding that local Domar weights are generally insufficient to describe propagation of even small shocks. Moreover\, we characterize how microeconomic volatility affects GDP\, finding that smooth changes in Domar weights overstate its adverse effects by omitting option value from switching suppliers.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Programmable Collective Dynamics in Active Matter and Robot Swarms
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Collective systems are able to exhibit complex global dynamics through relatively simple local interactions\, and they give us a powerful connection between nonequilibrium physics\, active matter\, and robotics. In this talk\, I will present our work on understanding and controlling collective behavior across theoretical and experimental systems. I will first discuss experimental work involving magnetic microrobot collectives in which competing pairwise interactions enable reconfiguration between distinct states\, locomotion\, and environmental interactions. And when heterogeneity and asymmetric interactions are introduced\, they can be used to program self-organization and generate various collective behaviors that include phase separation\, morphology changes\, and object manipulation. At the more theoretical level\, I will discuss swarmalators\, which are agents that simultaneously swarm and synchronize\, and I will show how chirality\, heterogeneity\, multiple internal phases\, and nonreciprocal interactions can enable fascinating and non-intuitive collective states\, as well as be exploited to systematically control the collective to exhibit desired shape formation\, navigation\, and object manipulation\, such that principles from active matter can be used for programmable collective robotic systems.\n\n\nContact: Silas Alben
