SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DCMB Tools and Technology Seminar by Jingying Wang (Computer Science & Engineering)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the DCMB Tools & Technology Seminar Series featuring a presentation by Jingying Wang from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Enjoy a complimentary pizza lunch while learning about innovative research and cutting-edge tools.\n\n“Human-AI Systems for Externalizing Surgical Expertise”\n\nAssociated Link: https://wjymonica.github.io/\n\nAbstract\nSurgical expertise is largely tacit: what separates experts from novices often lies in perceptual and decision-making skills\, including where to look\, when it is safe to proceed\, and how to perform each action. This is where human-AI systems can help. By capturing multimodal signals such as gaze\, surgical video\, narration\, and instrument motion\, they can help replay and visualize expert performance\, convert surgical recordings into learning resources\, and summarize experts’ mental models. In this talk\, I will present three examples: SurgGaze\, which captures surgeons’ attention intraoperatively\; Surgment\, which creates perceptual and cognitive exercises from surgical recordings\; and eXplainMR\, an ultrasound practice platform that provides explanations for action guidance. Together\, these examples show how human-AI systems can make surgical expertise more transferable\, accessible\, and scalable for medical students.
