SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DCMB Tools and Technology Seminar by Abhirath Anand (Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the DCMB Tools & Technology Seminar Series featuring a presentation by Abhirath Anand from the Department of Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics. Enjoy a complimentary pizza lunch while learning about innovative research and cutting-edge tools.\n\n\"hospitraceR: An R Package for WGS-Based Genomic Epidemiological Analysis of Healthcare-Associated Infections”\n\n- Tool Link: https://github.com/theabhirath/hospitraceR\n\nAbstract\n\nGenomic epidemiology\, which combines whole-genome sequencing (WGS) with patient data is becoming increasingly common to detect the transmission of hospital-acquired infections\, especially multi-drug resistant organisms. As high-throughput WGS becomes more affordable\, software that facilitates the analysis of this genomic data along with patient metadata becomes crucial to generate timely insights. Prior studies have shown that there can be many different approaches to detect transmission clusters with genomic epidemiology data\, and oftentimes these approaches will have tradeoffs more or less suitable for a certain dataset. We present hospitraceR\, an R package designed to facilitate such analyses. hospitraceR includes functions for detecting transmission clusters with two different methods\, the standard SNV threshold approach and a threshold-free approach. It also includes functions that can use patient movement information through the facility to suggest potential transmission explanations for the clusters. hospitraceR seeks to enable users to use multiple methods of transmission cluster detection and compare them easily using cluster comparison metrics. Metrics like the adjusted Rand Index (ARI) and adjusted mutual information (AMI) have been included for this purpose\, as has fraction of converts with shared source (FSS)\, a custom metric designed specifically for comparing transmission clusters. A companion package\, hospitraceRvisualize\, also includes opinionated plotting functions for certain commonplace visualizations that aid in epidemiological interpretations. We apply hospitraceR to a dataset consisting of 4 long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) from Chicago sampled for different periods of time as part of an intervention study and evaluate the two different approaches for cluster detection. We find distinct patterns exhibited by the transmission clusters in different locations and also compare the different clusters obtained with different SNV thresholds and linkage criterion for hierarchical clustering. The hospitraceR package proves to be helpful in facilitating such comparisons and makes it easy to use WGS data to aid epidemiological investigation.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Deaf Professionals and Communication Access in the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:This presentation explores the vital role of Deaf professionals and the importance of communication access in the workplace. It will examine the growing presence of Deaf individuals in professional fields\, particularly as accessibility\, legal protections\, and educational opportunities have expanded over time. Participants will also consider challenges Deaf professionals may encounter\, including communication barriers\, workplace accessibility gaps\, and common misconceptions about Deafness. \n\nIn addition\, the presentation will highlight how American Sign Language (ASL) has evolved as Deaf professionals have entered new and specialized fields. As careers in medicine\, science\, business\, technology\, and other areas have become more accessible\, ASL has continued to grow—developing new vocabulary and concepts that reflect the contributions and expertise of Deaf professionals. Overall\, this presentation emphasizes the importance of inclusive communication\, equitable workplace practices\, and the continued advancement of Deaf professionals across diverse career fields.\n\nAmerican Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services and Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) captioning services will be provided. If you need additional accommodations to participate in this webinar\, please email the ADA Coordinator at ADAcoordinator@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Presentation:GCC Denmark: Inequality & Social Change Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about GCC Denmark: Inequality & Social Change at this info session with Senior Study Abroad Advisor Callie Rouse and Program Instructor Rebecca Christensen! \n\nProgram Description: Denmark is consistently ranked among the happiest countries in the world and is known for its universal healthcare system\, tuition-free education from kindergarten through graduate school\, and open prison system. In this course\, we will use a sociological lens to compare and contrast the education\, public health\, and criminal legal systems in the United States and Denmark.\n\nDuring our three weeks abroad\, we will examine the causes and consequences of racism\, socioeconomic disparities\, and other social inequalities within the Copenhagen community. By immersing yourself in Danish culture\, you will learn about the country's unique norms\, values\, and policies\, and how they differ from American ways of living. Through visits to community organizations\, conversations with guest speakers\, and cultural excursions\, you will gain firsthand insight into Danish society.\n\nBy engaging in ongoing reflection and active learning\, you will develop a greater awareness of your social identities within a global context\, deepen your understanding of your own worldview\, and consider your role as an agent of social change. Together\, we will explore both the possibilities and challenges of applying Danish models of social welfare to create a more just and equitable society in the United States.\n\nStudents must enroll in SOC 225 Project Community: Sociology in Action in Winter 2027 as well to be eligible for this program.
