DESCRIPTION:Whether you are moving directly from your undergraduate degree or returning after some time away\, the first term of graduate school will challenge you to expand skills critical to your success. Two of the most essential skills needed to thrive are reading and writing. This four-part Rackham/Sweetland workshop series will showcase reading and writing practices for new graduate students that will inform your approaches to reading and writing through the course of your graduate career.\n\nThis workshop will address how you can read strategically to support your work as a writer in your academic field and discipline.\n\nWhat is the relationship between reading and writing for academic purposes? How can you read to support your work as a writer in your specific academic field and discipline? In this 50-minute Rackham/Sweetland workshop\, you will discover answers to these questions through guided reflection on your current reading (and writing) practices\, as well as a hands-on introduction to specific reading strategies that support writing. You'll also leave with additional resources and ideas for how to continue to explore and develop the reading-writing connection in your own academic work.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Bounds for Boundedly Rational Choice
DESCRIPTION:We introduce a novel framework to enhance our understanding of behavioral heterogeneity. At the core of our investigation is the question of when and how individual behavior can be accurately inferred from aggregate data\, particularly when individuals are susceptible to mistakes. Addressing this challenge requires bridging the gap between unobserved individual choices and observed aggregate outcomes. To this end\, we first present the “bounds” framework\, designed to constrain deviations from rational choice systematically. Then\, we establish com- prehensive results on “decomposability\,” a key property ensuring that aggregate choice behavior accurately mirrors the underlying characteristics of individual decision-making within a population.

DESCRIPTION:All students interested in attending the Hong Kong Short-Term program with Global Initiatives must attend a group interview. Students who do not attend will not be eligible for consideration. Interview blocks are limited to 10 participants each. This interview must be completed before the application due date on September 30 at Noon EST. \nLate arrival to your group interview will not be permitted\, and you will be turned away. You may not leave early from your group interview. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Extremal set theory as algebraic geometry
DESCRIPTION:Extremal set theory asks questions such as \"what is the largest family of pairwise intersecting k-element subsets of an n-element set?\"  Many questions of this type can be modeled with exterior algebras\, and admit extensions such as \"what is the largest self-annihilating subspace of k-forms in an n-variable exterior algebra?\"  The shifting technique in extremal set theory corresponds to algebraic geometric limits of certain curves in a Grassmannian.\n\nIn this talk\, I will overview these connections\, and go on to discuss recent joint work with Bulavka and Gandini.  We find a maximum subspace of k-forms in an n-variable exterior algebra that is self-annihilating but not annihilated by any 1-form.  A difficulty is that \"not annihilated by any 1-form\" is not a closed condition in the Grassmannian.  This work extends the Hilton-Milner theorem of extremal set theory to the exterior algebra setting\, and answers questions of Scott and Wilmer and of my own.
