SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Unbreakable: How to AI-Proof Your Job Search\, Career\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:Remember when “learn to code” was the answer to every career question? Now\, AI can code better than most humans. And computer science grads face higher unemployment than philosophy majors.\n\nBut here’s the truth nobody’s telling you: This wave isn’t about AI replacing you. It’s about AI changing what the world needs from you.\n\nJoin former LinkedIn and Khan Academy executive Jeremy Schifeling\, MBA ’12\, to discover exactly how to become the professional that AI makes more valuable\, not less.\n\nYou will master:\n\nThe SURF Framework: The four human and AI skills that make you unstoppable\, no matter what comes next\nThe 20X Playbook: The key human techniques that give you a 2\,000% advantage over other job seekers\, even in the toughest hiring markets\nThe Portfolio Career: The essential strategies that keep your career sustainable — both today and tomorrow\nThe wave is almost here. Grab your board. Let’s ride.\n\nThis event is offered in partnership with the University Career Center\, the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy\, and the School of Kinesiology.

SUMMARY:Performance:Division Street Pipes
DESCRIPTION:SMTD's Baroque Chamber Orchestra\, led by Professor Joseph Gascho\, performs Cantata BWV 169 \"Gott soll allein mein Herze haben” featuring University Organist and Professor Nicole Keller\, organ.\n\nDivision Street Pipes concerts features talented students and faculty of the U-M Organ Department on Thursdays at 12:15pm on the Richards-Fowkes organ at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. These 30-minute performances are free and open to the public\, and audience members are invited to enjoy their lunch while listening. The series is co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Organ Department and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in an effort to bring organ music to local audiences while connecting U-M organ students with the wider community. Concerts offer attendees the opportunity to hear the versatility of the pipe organ beyond a worship setting.\n\n*There is no recital on November 26.*

SUMMARY:Social / Informal Gathering:Creative Reuse at the Lab Swap Shop
DESCRIPTION:In association with the Michigan Arts Festival hosted by the Arts Initiative\, the Lab Swap Shop will be holding creative reuse workshops during regular Thursday hours from October 1 to October 29. These events use surplus lab supplies for art activities\, demonstrating the different ways that items can be reused. Workshop activities are as follows:\n--- 10/1: Block Printing Lab Coats **During Climate Week 2026**\n--- 10/8: Flask Potion Making\n--- 10/15: Flask Vase Painting\n--- 10/22: Serological Pipette Pointillism Painting\n--- 10/29: Spooky Swap Shop - Any and all crafts!\n\nJoin us for these events and get free supplies for your lab while you are there! You can also check out the Door-to-Door Lab Reuse Catalog for additional free lab supplies looking to find a home. Reach out to sustainable-labs@umich.edu with any questions!

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Fixed Effects in the Tails (with Raffaella Giacomini\, Annalisa Loviglio\, and Yulong Wang)
DESCRIPTION:Many economic decisions target units at the extremes\, such as the most effective teachers\, the worst-performing schools\, or the most productive firms. These decisions often rely on fixed-effect estimates\, but in short panels extreme estimates may reflect unusually large estimation error rather than extreme latent effects. We develop a semiparametric framework for identification and inference on the tails of latent group effects in short panels\, where estimation error need not vanish. We show that within-group differences remove the group effect and provide observable information about the tail of the estimation error in group averages. This yields a conservative one-sided test of whether latent effects have a heavier tail than estimation error. Under regular variation and this tail dominance condition\, tail estimators based on noisy group averages are asymptotically equivalent to infeasible estimators based on the latent effects. We use this oracle-equivalence result to derive frequentist inference for the Pareto exponent\, extreme quantiles\, and tail conditional expectations\, and to establish consistent rankings of a fixed number of extreme units. We apply the method to administrative data on Italian middle schools to quantify the gains from replacing schools in the lower tail with average-quality schools.
