SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Plugging in the Wind and Sun: Grid Integration with Cost Externalities and Uncertainty\, joint with Gautam Gowrisankaran and Nicholas Ryan
DESCRIPTION:There is currently 140% as much renewable power capacity seeking to connect to the U.S. electric grid as total installed capacity. This backlog may result from project interdependencies causing uncertainty over how these costs evolve. We study the interconnection queue by which projects connect to the California electric grid. We find evidence of both congestion and cost sharing between projects\, and that many projects exit the queue quickly after their initial cost assessment. We embed these descriptive findings in a dynamic equilibrium model where potential projects choose to enter the queue\, face interdependent costs that evolve over time\, and ultimately decide whether to exit or sign a contract to connect. Counterfactuals show that removing insurance against cost reassessment increases decreases inter- connection costs 14.4%\, but auctioning spare grid capacity only encourages more profitable projects to contract.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Making the Most of 'Hot Moments': Election Edition
DESCRIPTION:Teaching and learning centers use the term 'hot moments' to describe a sudden eruption of tension\, conflict\, or big emotion during class\, often connected to a heightened awareness of the social differences in the room. Election seasons can generate 'hot moments' in every discipline\, whether your courses frequently raise potentially sensitive subjects or never do so deliberately. How can you navigate those interactions in ways that are responsive to students and also advance course learning goals? In this interactive workshop for instructors in all academic disciplines\, participants will reflect on their own experiences of 'hot moments'\, consider a range of pedagogical choices\, and practice language for responding to hot moments in the classroom. \n\nThis session is offered as a part of the Promoting Democracy Teaching Series by CRLT & Ginsberg Center.\n\nOpen to UM faculty\, graduate students/GSIs\, and post-docs. If you are UM staff with instructional responsibilities who would like to register\, please reach out to teachdemocracy@umich.edu \n\nREGISTER: https://events.blackthorn.io/en/Hn1RKit7/g/2kTsKXAV0p/making-the-most-of-hot-moments-election-edition-5a1oUrFb3O5/overview

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:OGPS Science Writing & Communication - Fall 2026
DESCRIPTION:This workshop series will equip you with practical strategies for communicating science with clarity and confidence as a graduate student or postdoctoral researcher. You will explore approaches to developing productive writing habits\, outlining a clear and compelling research manuscript\, and adapting scientific messages for different disciplines and audiences. The series will also offer guidance and hands-on practice in designing and delivering effective poster presentations and oral talks. Through interactive activities\, practical frameworks\, and opportunities to apply what you learn to your own research\, you will strengthen your written\, visual\, and verbal science communication skills.\nAims & Objectives\nBy the end of this series\, you will be able to:\n\nStructure and design engaging scientific posters that clearly convey your research and enhance audience understanding and message retention.Organize the motivation\, problem statement\, and results of your research into a logical manuscript outline that supports a clear and compelling scientific argument.Build confidence and productivity as a writer by reflecting on your writing habits\, considering your audience\, and applying strategies to overcome procrastination and maintain momentum.\nAdapt technical detail\, terminology\, context\, and emphasis to communicate your research accurately and effectively across disciplines\, audiences\, and professional settings.\n\nDevelop and deliver effective oral presentations using principles of audience engagement\, scientific storytelling\, clear organization\, and confident public speaking.
