SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Colloquium: Combinatorics of Quiver Mutations
DESCRIPTION:Scott Neville is an RTG postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oregon mathematics department. He completed his PhD at the University of Michigan in 2025 and has recently held positions at ICERM and LACIM. His research focuses on using computation and algorithms to better understand algebraic combinatorics\, with a recent emphasis on cluster algebras.\n\nExplore quiver mutations - transformations of directed graphs with applications across mathematics. Examine mutation cycles\, their challenges for greedy algorithms\, and new invariants that can quickly determine whether two quivers are mutation equivalent.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | Cultivating a Global Radical Imagination at the Grassroots: Communist Women’s Mobilization in Mid-20th-c. Assam/Eastern Bengal
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person and virtually on Zoom. If you would like to attend via Zoom\, registration is required. Once you've registered\, joining information will be sent to your email. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/2jjGN\n\nThis talk examines the lives and political projects of young women activists in 1930s–40s Sylhet who were drawn to join the Communist Party. Among them was Hena (Dutt) Das\, who remained in (East) Pakistan after Partition\, and who would be politically and socially engaged in Bangladesh until her death in 2009. In this talk\, Shehabuddin will focus on the revolutionary education and experiences that first brought Hena Dutt and her teenage classmates to the Communist Party\, how they understood and inhabited communism in their daily lives\, and how their personal and political histories complicate ideas about religious and national belonging\, about the much-described tug between communism and feminism\, and about the relationship between the personal and the political.\n\nElora Shehabuddin is professor of gender & women's studies\, director of global studies\, and director of the Subir and Malini Chowdhury Center for Bangladesh Studies at UC Berkeley. Her last book\, *Sisters in the Mirror: A History of Muslim Women and the Global Politics of Feminism* was selected as a 2022 Choice Outstanding Academic Title by the American Library Association and awarded the 2023 Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy Book Prize from the Association for Asian Studies. She currently serves as co-editor of the *Journal of Bangladesh Studies* (Brill)\, on the editorial board of the Cambridge University Press book series\, *Muslim South Asia* and as president of the Association for Asian Studies.\n\n*Image Credit: Waseka Nahar/HerStories*\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:From Genomes to Grains: Engineering Rice for a Changing Climate- 2026 MCDB Connell Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:2026 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Molecular\, Cellular\, and Developmental Biology department at the University of Michigan and we hope you will join us to celebrate at the 2026 Connell Lecture:\n\nFrom Genomes to Grains: Engineering Rice for a Changing Climate\nThe rapid advance of genetic technologies has provided new tools to generate crops that are resilient to climate change. Professor Pamela Ronald will discuss engineering plants for resistance to infection and strategies to reduce methane emissions in rice.\n\nRonald is a Distinguished Professor in the Dept of Plant Pathology and Genome Center at UC Davis and an Investigator at the Innovative Genomics Institute\, UC Berkeley. She also serves as a faculty scientist in Berkeley Lab’s Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology division and Director of Grass Genetics at the Joint BioEnergy Institute. She is a faculty affiliate of the Center on Food Security and the Environment at Stanford University. \n\nThe Priscilla Connell Memorial Lecture is MCDB's flagship lecture. This annual lecture series has an illustrious history with presentations by Nobel Laureates\, National Medal of Science Recipients\, National Academy of Sciences Members\, and Royal Society Members.
