SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 899: Lionel Robert
DESCRIPTION:Machines are often assumed to sidestep the biases that shape human judgment\, but it remains unclear whether that assumption holds when a security robot replaces a police officer. As robotic patrol\, surveillance\, and traffic-enforcement systems move from pilot programs into everyday public spaces\, understanding whether they alter—or simply reproduce—the racial disparities long documented in policing has become an urgent question.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:What’s Wrong with this Hand? Doing Disability Studies with Doctors\, Administrators\, & Other Helpful Experts
DESCRIPTION:What happens when we share our research with those who are researching us? Or when the insights from our research are used against us\, often in the guise of assistance or protection? And what happens to disability studies research when ethnic\, gender\, and sexuality studies departments are made to disappear? In this talk\, which will likely generate more questions about these questions than answers to them\, I bring some of my experiences doing disability studies as a disabled person to bear on a larger work-in-progress on disability marginalia.\n\nCurrently a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study\, Alison Kafer is the Embrey Associate Professor of [redacted] at the University of Texas at Austin. She is the author of Feminist\, Queer\, Crip\, and her work has appeared in a number of journals and anthologies. Being by the water brings her joy\, as does making things with clay.\n\nWe want to make our events accessible to all participants. CART services will be provided. To request additional accommodations\, please email akheff@umich.edu or davisemm@umich.edu.\n\nOctober 15\, 3pm - 4:30pm\nMichigan Union\, Kuenzel Room (1st Floor)\nLivestream also available\, after Registration.\n\nEvent is free\, but registration is required.\nhttps://sessions.studentlife.umich.edu/track/event/session/115340\n\nThis event is part of the (Doing) Disability research from the (Disabled Margins) project. Funding for this event was provided by the Provost's Disability Scholarship Initiative.
