SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Positive Links Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Positive Links Speaker Series: In the Crosshairs: A Stakeholder-First Framework for Navigating Bias and Preempting Backlash Against Women Leaders\nAparna Joshi\nThursday\, February 13\, 2025\n1:00 - 2:00 p.m. ET\nFree\, registration required to obtain login information\nOnline\n\nEvent link:\nhttps://positiveorgs.bus.umich.edu/events/a-stakeholder-first-framework-for-navigating-bias-and-preempting-backlash-against-women-leaders/\n\nPositive Links:\nThe Positive Links Speaker Series\, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations\, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics\, students\, staff\, and leaders.\n\nAbout the talk:\nIn today’s polarized world\, women leaders who have navigated immense barriers to reach the very highest levels encounter uncharted territory once they get to the top. They often face harsh judgments and heightened scrutiny. While some stakeholders may certainly be receptive\, many others may either overtly or covertly raise concerns about women in leadership positions.\n\nDrawing from her cutting-edge research\, Aparna Joshi will share a stakeholder-first approach organizations can take to counteract bias and foster a more inclusive environment at the highest levels\, helping to reduce friction and the spread of misinformation about women leaders in a polarized environment. She’ll discuss how mapping stakeholders and developing customized strategies based on motivations and the sources of uncertainty or anxiety can help resist or deter gender biases.\n\nDon’t miss this opportunity to enhance your understanding of a stakeholder-first approach and its implications for building a more equitable and inclusive leadership landscape. Join us to discover actionable insights and strategies you can implement in your organization to support women’s leadership and curb bias effectively.\n\nAbout Joshi:\nAparna Joshi is a Professor of Management at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. Over the past twenty years\, Aparna’s research has focused on how social differences translate into inequality with a specific focus on gender inequality across a range of professional settings such as among scientists\, lawyers\, engineers and chief executives. In these occupational contexts\, although women and minorities have made significant human capital gains\, fundamental barriers to future progress remain. Her research aims at building actionable theoretical models that can inform practices aimed at reducing barriers and enhancing inclusion in these settings. She has received numerous awards including the Cummings Award for Early to Mid-Career Scholarly Achievement\, one of the highest professional honors in the field\, by the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management and she was appointed a Fellow of the Academy of Management in 2019. She has also been featured on Stanford’s list of the top 2% of research scientists in the world. Prior to joining Michigan Ross\, she was on the faculty of the Smeal College of Business\, Pennsylvania State University and at the University of Illinois\, Champaign-Urbana. \n\nHost:\nMonica Worline\, Faculty Director\, Center for Positive Organizations\n\nSeries Sponsors:\nThe Center for Positive Organizations thanks the Sanger Leadership Center\, Tauber Institute for Global Operations\, and Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies for their support of the 2024-25 Positive Links Speaker Series.\n\nSeries Promotional Partners:\nAdditionally\, we thank Ann Arbor SPARK\, the Managerial and Organizational Cognition (MOC) Division of the Academy of Management\, and the Organization Development and Change (ODC) Division of the Academy of Management for their Positive Links Speaker Series promotional partnerships.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:AI & Aging: Innovations & Challenges for Global Health
DESCRIPTION:Please note: space is limited. Please apply to attend through the RSVP form\n\nAs advances in healthcare and standards of living continue to improve\, life expectancy is increasing and countries worldwide are experiencing a demographic shift towards older populations. This shift brings many challenges and opportunities related to healthcare\, wellbeing\, and productivity. While healthy aging is as much a concern in the Global South as it is in the Global North\, available data sources have historically tended to be restricted to the latter. This has caused a disparity in our understanding of global aging. New datasets from MICDA will help U-M researchers better understand the challenges and opportunities in both the Global South as well as the Global North so that we can begin to address these issues globally. \n\nJoin the Michigan AI Lab and the e-Health and Artificial Intelligence (eHAIL) program for an in-person discussion on the opportunities and challenges of AI-powered tools and approaches to enable healthy aging globally. U-M researchers working in aging & health will briefly present on new data sources & projects.\n\nTable discussions with domain experts in health\, aging\, survey research & artificial intelligence will form the core of the event. Participants are encouraged to bring their own topics\, problems\, and innovations\, to discuss opportunities and challenges in using AI approaches for healthy aging globally.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Recognizing Deep Fakes
DESCRIPTION:Due to the instantaneous nature of politics and social media\, the only way to combat fake multimedia is to detect it in close to real time. Professor Malik develops tools to fight against fake multimedia. He has created a method to detect computer-generated audio at near 100% accuracy and is now turning to fake multimedia detection in real time. Malik's current tools can differentiate real from fake audio at the microscopic level with specific markers. These tools can be used by newsrooms\, social media platforms\, and smart speakers. Professor Malik will discuss the current state of fake media and the strategies used to identify it as well as approaches to verify authenticity.
