SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nHealthcare constitutes nearly one-fifth of the U.S. economy and approximately 10% of the global economy\, yet it faces profound challenges\, including inequitable access\, an aging population\, and rising per capita costs. These factors underscore the urgent need for innovative solutions. In this talk\, I will present how artificial intelligence\, driven by the urgent needs of healthcare\, is advancing both clinical and technological frontiers. I will share our work on medical image reconstruction\, MRI-based automated diagnosis\, and AI-powered precision medicine solutions. These applications are built on specialized deep learning algorithms\, such as video-based AI and longitudinal imaging reasoning\, with a focus on integrating biological complexities into their design. By bridging engineering principles with clinical applications\, we aim to transform medical diagnostics and treatment while broadening AI's impact across disciplines\, paving the way for more effective and accessible healthcare solutions.\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/94337625486

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Mending Educational Workshop: Learn Basic Mending Techniques for Clothing Repair
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand! SEAS mending events have returned. This year we have an educational focus. Sarah Davis\, a second-year SEAS master's student\, will teach you a handful of simple yet effective techniques so you can confidently repair your own clothing. Learning how to mend may seem daunting at first\, but we will have several experienced menders on hand to work with you\, answer your questions\, and to help you build confidence and competence to mend on your own. We will provide all supplies. Just bring yourself! Contact Jason Krick\, at masonbee@umich.edu with any questions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Department of Astronomy 2024-2025 Colloquium Series presents:
DESCRIPTION:\"X-ray heartbeats from the nuclei of galaxies\"\n\nX-ray Quasi-Periodic Eruptions (QPEs) are the latest and perhaps the most peculiar addition to the zoo of extragalactic transients. They are high-amplitude bursts of X-ray radiation recurring every several hours and originating near the central black holes in galactic nuclei of low-mass galaxies. So far\, only a handful of such events has been found\, although with rising interest in the broader community given their observational and theoretical connection with tidal disruption events and\, possibly\, low-frequency gravitational wave sources. Some of the latest models suggest that these eruptions are triggered by extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs)\, in which the secondary stellar body interacts with the accretion flow of the primary massive black hole. I will outline the observational properties of QPE sources and the latest insights from theoretical models\, including their tantalizing connection with LISA EMRis.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:\"Cloud Policy: Spectral Traces and Analog Imprints\" a talk by Professor Jennifer Holt
DESCRIPTION:The contemporary governance of data stored in the cloud is replete with the lasting inscriptions of policy written for an analog era and markets that no longer exist. In the US\, the outmoded frameworks of data regulation expose the specter of historical policies that still haunt the cloud wherever it touches the ground. These traces of the past have staggering implications. The effects of this protracted failure of regulatory imagination range from the gutting of the public interest and the loss of digital civil liberties to the creation of a surveillance society that began at the onset of the computer age. By looking through a historical lens\, we can identify the deep footprints of these regulatory power struggles to use lessons from the past to create better paradigms for the future.\n\nJennifer Holt is Professor and Chair of the Film and Media Studies Department at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. She is the author of Cloud Policy: A History of Regulating Pipelines\, Platforms\, and Data (MIT Press\, 2024) and Empires of Entertainment (2011). She is also co-editor of the SAGE Handbook of the Digital Media Economy (2022)\; Distribution Revolution (2014)\; Connected Viewing: Selling\, Streaming & Sharing Media in the Digital Age (2013)\; and Media Industries: History\, Theory\, Method (2009).
