SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DE Seminar: Zero viscosity limit of 1D viscous conservation laws at the point of first shock formation
DESCRIPTION:Despite the small scales involved\, the compressible Euler equations seem to be a good model even in the presence of shocks. Introducing viscosity is one way to resolve some of these small-scale effects. In this talk\, we examine the vanishing viscosity limit near the formation of a generic shock in one spatial dimension for a class of viscous conservation laws which includes compressible Navier Stokes. We provide an asymptotic expansion in viscosity of the viscous solution via the help of matching approximate solutions constructed in regions where the viscosity is perturbative and where it is dominant. Furthermore\, we recover the inviscid (singular) solution in the limit\, and we uncover universal structure in the viscous correctors. This is joint work with John Anderson and Cole Graham.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Environmental modulation of microbial interactions and community assembly
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our ongoing Thursday Seminar Series.\n\nMicrobial communities are crucial for our health and the functioning of the planet\, but the rules governing how they assemble are still unclear. In this talk\, I will outline mechanistic links between changes in the diversity and structure of microbial communities and variations in fundamental environmental variables\, including available nutrients\, temperature\, and salinity. Overall\, my work shows the power of combining theory-informed controlled experiments with data from communities in natural habitats to get a mechanistic understanding of the principles governing microbial community assembly.

DESCRIPTION:THURSDAY FEBRUARY 13\, 2025 | 4:00 PM ET | Zoom Webinar: http://bit.ly/MuslimAIZoom\n\nJoin the Global Islamic Studies Center and the Department of History of Art on February 13\, 2025 at 4 pm ET online for a lecture by visiting scholar Dr. Christoph Günther (University of Erfurt\, Germany) on the growing use of artificial intelligence on Muslim TikTok and social media videos.\n\nMuslim content creators use AI-generated texts and images to illustrate Qur'anic passages and hadith narrations\, creating visually engaging content to promote ethical guidance and pious conduct. We discuss how AI technologies mediate religious expression in the digital age and the implications of blending sacred and secular visual vocabularies in the pursuit of piety. This is the second event in the GISC “Muslims in the Digital Age” series.\n\nChristoph Günther has a background in Islamic Studies\, Arabic and History and is currently conducting research on the ways in which Muslim actors employ (moving) images on social media platforms to articulate their interpretation of how Islam should be lived\, proclaimed and interpreted. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student DGT: Hopf Algebras\, Steinberg Modules\, and H^k(GL_nZ\; Q)
DESCRIPTION:This talk aims to give a gentle exposition of recent work establishing an algebraic structure on the groups H^k(GL_nZ\; Q). These cohomology groups are of interest in several areas of mathematics\, and computing them has proven extremely difficult. One approach to studying these groups is via \"Steinberg modules\"\, which are defined in terms of certain simplicial complexes. After giving a brief introduction to these objects\, I will describe a combinatorial way to put a product and coproduct structure on the Steinberg modules\, and discuss recent work of Ash-Miller-Patzt that used this to deduce a Hopf algebra structure on the cohomology H^k(GL_nZ\; Q)\, and describe how this helps in finding new cohomology classes.
