SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DCMB Weekly Seminar featuring Liyue Shen\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nDeepening our understanding of human health is more important than ever before to address real-world challenges in biomedicine and healthcare. In this talk\, I will introduce cutting-age research on AI in medical imaging and biomedical data processing\, focusing on how to develop efficient and reliable machine learning (ML) models for biomedical data analysis\, towards the goal of multimodal generalist medical AI. \n\nBio:\nLiyue Shen is an assistant professor in the EECS department at the University of Michigan. Prior to that\, she received her B.E. degree in Electronic Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2016\, and obtained her Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering\, Stanford University in 2022. She also spent one year as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Biomedical Informatics\, Harvard Medical School. Her research interest is in Biomedical AI\, which lies in the interdisciplinary areas of machine learning\, computer vision\, signal and image processing\, biomedical imaging\, medical image analysis\, and data science. She recently focuses on the generative diffusion models\, implicit neural representation learning and multimodal foundation models. She is the recipient of Stanford Bio-X Bowes Graduate Student Fellowship (2019-2022)\, and was selected as the Rising Star in EECS by MIT and the Rising Star in Data Science by the University of Chicago in 2021. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Donia Human Rights Center Panel | Human Rights in Nicaragua: From Dictatorship to Hope
DESCRIPTION:Panelists: \n\nTamara Dávila Rivas\, Human Rights Fellow at the ARCUS Center for Social Justice and Leadership\, Kalamazoo College\n\nDora María Téllez\, Visiting Professor\, Richard E. Greenleaf Distinguished Chair in Latin American Studies\, Tulane University\n\nAna Margarita Vijil\, Central American Leadership Initiative Fellow at the Aspen Global Leadership Network and Senior Fellow at George Washington University Global Women's Institute\n\nModerator: Luciana Chamorro\, Visiting Assistant Professor\, Department of Anthropology\, University of Michigan\n\nIn 2018\, the Nicaraguan government brutally suppressed nationwide protests\, inaugurating an ongoing undeclared state of exception in the country. Since then\, constitutional rights have been suspended\, and one in eight citizens has fled the country. Join us for a conversation about the current human rights crisis in Nicaragua with three prominent social leaders and human rights defenders. All three were held in solitary confinement for two years and stripped of their Nicaraguan nationality for opposing the consolidation of a new dictatorship in Nicaragua. Through their organizing while in exile\, they continue to foster hope in a non-authoritarian future.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at umichhumanrights@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
