SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Lessons of Authoritarianism and Democratic Resilience in Latin America: \"Memoria\" as Resistance: Comparative Human Rights Education in Chile and Argentina
DESCRIPTION:During the Cold War\, human rights organizations in Latin America have calculated there were close to 100\,000 missing persons due to state-led violence\, including the kidnapping of children. In Argentina alone\, 30\,000 persons were forcibly disappeared\, and 500 children were taken from women in detention and placed with families favorable to the military regime. During this time\, Chilean Dictator\, Augusto Pinochet\, launched Operation Condor\, a secret\, multi-lateral counter-intelligence program that came to include military governments in Uruguay\, Paraguay\, Argentina\, Bolivia\, Brazil\, Peru\, and Ecuador. Their collaborations led to hundreds of international kidnappings\, torture\, and assassinations of civilians\, human rights activists and political refugees within the region\, U.S.\, and Europe. Yet\, through a combination of domestic resistance and mobilization by activists and international pressure\, countries like Chile and Argentina transitioned to not only thriving democracies\, but global leaders in human rights education. \n\nJoin us to learn from Chilean activist and Manager of Archives at the Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Chile\, Juan Carlos Vega Briones and the former Executive Director of the ESMA Museum and Site of Memory of Argentina\, Mayki Gorosito.\n\n Event presentations are in Spanish with English translation.\n\n\nCo-sponsors:\n Donia Human Rights Center\, Center for Emerging Democracies\, University of Michigan Global Engagement\, Office of the Provost.\n\nAccommodation: If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.\n Email: -- lacs.office@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Michigan Society of Fellows: 55th Anniversary Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate with Us\nThe Michigan Society of Fellows’ 55th Anniversary Symposium will take place on November 6 to 7\, 2025\, at the historic Rackham Graduate School on the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus. This landmark gathering celebrates more than 55 years of interdisciplinary scholarship and artistic innovation and the vibrant community that has flourished through the society.\n\nAbout the Symposium\nThe program features 16 fellowship alumni in interdisciplinary panel dialogues exploring urgent and enduring questions across the sciences\, humanities\, and arts. The symposium also includes a recital of chamber music from the Haitian Revolution\, recovered by a recent fellow.\n\nTogether\, these panels and performances highlight the society’s ongoing contributions to scholarship\, public discourse\, and creative expression. The symposium offers a rare opportunity for intellectual exchange\, community building\, and collective reflection on the past\, present\, and future of the Michigan Society of Fellows.\n\nRegistration\nRegistration is open to the public. For more details and to register\, please visit the Michigan Society of Fellows website: https://societyoffellows.umich.edu/anniversary-symposium/

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Topology Seminar: Colored Heegaard Floer homology: structures and examples
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We define new knot invariants\, called colored Heegaard Floer homology for any knot K in the three sphere. This is the colimit of the cobordism maps from the (n\, mn)-cable of K to (n\, (m+1)n)-cable by letting m goes to infinity\, which is invariant under full twists. We will describe the module structures of the colored Heegaard Floer homology and compute the colored Heegaard Floer homology for L-space knots.

SUMMARY:Exercise / Fitness:ANCIENT BREATHING TECHNIQUES
DESCRIPTION:We will be rotating breathing techniques weekly. The first 10 minutes or so will be about explaining the technique and talking about tips for it. Then\, we will be performing the technique with periodic breaks to talk about any feelings or sensations experienced.\nWe recommend bringing blankets\, yoga mats\, or towels to lie on\, as the techniques are most effective when done lying down. Sessions will run from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM!
