SUMMARY:Performance:Jenna Moon\, carillon
DESCRIPTION:SMTD doctoral alumna Jenna Moon performs on the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE Community Dialogue Series
DESCRIPTION:A dialogue about the question\, not the answer.\n\nHow can an optimization model take into account the effect that a system has on people\, communities\, and the environment? In this community dialogue\, Prof. Aaron Johnson will lead us in collaboratively thinking about the different ways that we\, as engineers\, can account for the effect that our technology has on people and the environment. The first part of the dialogue will involve a small-group activity around Johnson and colleagues' work on spaceport location planning. Then\, we will talk about the social and environmental factors that engineers can--and cannot--include in engineering models. We will not come to a single conclusion\, and Johnson does not have one answer to give to you. Instead\, the importance of this dialogue lies in posing this question as a part of engineering work\, starting to talk about it together\, and then continuing to think about it as we go about our engineering work.\n\nBio: Aaron W. Johnson is an Assistant Professor in the Aerospace Engineering Department and a Core Faculty member of the Engineering Education Research Program at the University of Michigan. His design-based research focuses on how to re-contextualize engineering science engineering courses to better reflect and prepare students for the reality of ill-defined\, sociotechnical engineering practice. Johnson holds a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Michigan and a Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prior to re-joining Michigan\, he was an instructor in Aerospace Engineering Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder. Outside of work\, Johnson enjoys reading\, collecting LEGO NASA sets\, biking\, camping\, and playing disc golf.

SUMMARY:Other:LSA Mentorship Panel and Alum Meet & Greet (Open to All LSA Students)
DESCRIPTION:Join your student peers and alums from an active LSA community for an afternoon of connections where you’ll explore the impact 1:1 mentoring can have on your own undergraduate journey and career development. Learn about mentoring through first-hand experiences from students who just completed the year-long LSA Mentorship Program (more info on that below). You can mix and mingle with alum mentors from a range of majors and industries and get a taste of the kind of career advice you can receive over the course of next year. With the school year almost over\, take advantage of this on-campus event to connect with LSA alums and fellow students in a low-stakes environment where you can ask any questions\, practice connecting with professions\, and find your people within LSA. \n\nAbout the Alums: \n\nJudy Kehler - General Studies to City Government to Consulting\n\nJenna Golden - Poli Sci to Twitter to Consulting \n\nNikil Ramanathan - Econ to Senior Product Manager \n\nMark Gerstein - From Poli Sci to Partner \n\nJenise Williams - From Psychology to K-12 Education\n\nJamie West - From Creative Writing to Computer Science \n\nLeslie Mitchel Bond - From Psychology & Poli Sci to Healthcare \n\nEileen Enright - From Poli Sci\, Spanish & International Studies to Nonprofits \n\n\n\nAbout the LSA Mentorship Program:\n\nThe LSA Mentorship Program matches current LSA undergrads with LSA alums in 1-1 mentoring relationships that carry on throughout the academic year. During the year-long program\, students will learn directly from their alum match through regular guided meetings and also through exclusive events for students to practice networking with the alum mentors\, whose identities span majors\, industries\, identities\, and experiences.\n\n\n\nYou should attend this session if you are:\n\nAn LSA student interested in connecting with LSA alums and peers\n\nCurious about the LSA Mentorship Program\, and how you can be a part of it next year\n\nLooking for ways to build and your own U-M network\n\n \n\nWhat you’ll gain by attending:\n\nAn opportunity to be in community with LSA students and alums \n\nThe chance to learn about the LSA Mentorship Program and how to apply\n\nPractice connecting with LSA alums in a low-stakes environment\n\n \n\nThe Opportunity Hub aims to deliver inclusive and accessible experiences and welcomes all LSA students to participate. This event is in the LSA building is a wheelchair accessible building which includes wheelchair-accessible restrooms\, a gender-inclusive and accessible restroom\, places to sit or stand during the event\, and accessible parking options nearby on State Street. To request other accommodations please contact LSA Hub Events at lsa.hubevents@umich.edu or 734-763-4674 so we can make arrangements.\n\n \n\nRSVP now to be part of the celebration! \n\n \n\nPlease send any questions to lsa-connect@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Narrative Alchemy: How Sharing Work with Children Shapes Parents' Narrative Identity Construction
DESCRIPTION:We conduct a qualitative\, inductive study of working parents and their school-aged children to examine how parents co-construct work identity narratives with their children. Our analysis revealed that parents’ work orientations influenced how they share their work with their children (i.e.\, withholding\, telling\, showing\, demonstrating\, or involving)\, reinforcing or shaping their work identities. We find that when parents’ work holds a more central place in their identity\, such as in the case of a “calling” as opposed to a “job\,” parents engage in richer and more multifaceted forms of narrative sharing with their children. These unique sharing strategies preface particular narrative identity patterns\, including identity diminishment\, affirmation\, enhancement\, or expansion. Through bids for connection and understanding\, parents who initially withheld their work narratives from their children (those with “jobs”) achieved self-enhancement as children sought and ascribed a more profound sense of meaning to their parents’ work. Parents who initially sought to affirm their identities through narrative (those with “callings”) achieved self-expansion by involving children in their work. Our proposed model describes a narrative alchemy that makes contributions to the narrative identity literature.
