SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Fellowships and Grants Action Workshop with ONSF
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever considered\, even for a moment\, applying for a major national scholarship\, fellowship\, or grant? Does the idea of applying feel daunting? Is it even worth it? Where should you even start? \n\nThe Michigan Leadership Certificate program (Barger Leadership Institute and MLEAD) is partnering with the Office of National Scholarships and Fellowships for a workshop on making a scholarship action plan\, and how the application process itself can benefit you. \n\nThis workshop is open to all University of Michigan undergraduates! Join us for some practical learning\, and snack on some Curry On kati rolls while you're at it!

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Gilbert S. Omenn Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics Weekly Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Enhancers are crucial genetic elements that control tissue- and cell-type-specific gene expression in metazoans. Omic studies revealed hundreds of thousands of putative enhancers in the human genome\, many of which are associated with\, and may functionally contribute to\, human disease risk. However\, the mechanisms underlie enhancer action remain incompletely understood. Dr. Li’s lab focused on using a combination of genetic/epigenome methods to understand the action mechanisms of enhancers and aspire to use these insights to understand human genetics and/or to facilitate disease diagnosis or treatment.\n\nResearch Interests:\nGenomics\, epigenomics\, bioinformatics\, long noncoding RNAs\, enhancer RNAs (eRNAs)\, enhancers\, three-dimensional genome architecture\, cohesin and condensin\, genomic variations/mutations\, RNA binding proteins.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Probaiblity and Analysis Seminar: The multinomial dimer model
DESCRIPTION:An N dimer cover of a graph is a collection of edges such that every vertex is contained in exactly N edges of the collection. The multinomial dimer model\, introduced by Kenyon and Pohoata\, studies a natural but non-uniform measure on N dimer covers. While the standard dimer model (N=1) is exactly solvable only in two dimensions (i.e. on planar graphs)\, in the N to infinity limit\, the multinomial dimer model turns out to be exactly solvable even in three (or higher) dimensions. In this talk\, I will define the model and discuss new results in two and three dimensions\, including: explicit formulas for the free energy\, a large deviation principle\, Euler-Lagrange equations\, and descriptions of limit shapes and some of their properties. This is joint work with Richard Kenyon.

SUMMARY:Other:Promoting Civic Discourse - Democratic and Republican politicians on bridging the political divide
DESCRIPTION:Former Michigan State Senators Tonya Schuitmaker and Rebekah Warren are the leads at Michiganders for Civic Resilience (MCR)\, which is dedicated to fostering a vibrant democracy founded on trust\, dialogue\, and accountability. Its mission is \"to bridge the divides of political polarization\, restore civil discourse\, and uphold the integrity of U.S. elections.\"\n\nThe politicians from across the aisle will discuss cross-partisan collaboration and how it can play a vital role in promoting unity\, understanding\, and constructive dialogue\, ultimately benefiting the public by facilitating more inclusive and effective governance. The discussion also will include former chairs of the state Republican and Democratic parties\, Rusty Hills and Mark Brewer\, respectively.
