SUMMARY:Other:QMSS Presents VIZ'D: A (Fun & Friendly) Data Visualization Competition
DESCRIPTION:Join the Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences (QMSS) program for a night of fun with data at VIZ'D - a friendly\, accessible data visualization & storytelling competition! Student teams of 2-3 will compete in 2 rounds: an appetizer and a main course round\, similar to the Food Network TV show Chopped. For each round\, students will be given a \"basket of data\" to translate into engaging visualizations\, charts\, or figures using Excel\, Tableau\, R\, or others -- your choice! Then\, teams will have just a couple of minutes to present their data story and try to convince our live classroom audience to vote for their team's creations. Round 1 performance may bring your team an advantage (or sabotage!) during round 2!\n\nOnly the most basic skills as taught in QMSS 201 (or other introductory-level courses) are sufficient to compete! This event is designed so that even CURRENT QMSS 201 students will be able to successfully participate and compete -- we mean it!\n\nAll competitors will leave with some U-M gear\, but the better you do\, the better chance you have at our biggest prizes! We will also have a couple of prize drops for lucky audience members.\n\nWe are looking for 8 teams of competitors on a first-come\, first-served basis. During registration\, you can choose to compete or to be part of our live student audience. You will also have the option to sign up with a partner/team already in mind or as a \"free agent.\" We will do our best to pair up all free agents for the competition! We will contact you if you sign up early enough to be locked into a team or to join the competition waitlist and be part of our live voting audience.\n\nDinner will be provided!\n\nCompete for glory\, prizes\, and something to add to your resume or personal website as a way to showcase your data skills!\n\nOpen to all U-M students.
