SUMMARY:Film Screening:Collapsed Walls
DESCRIPTION:From Moroccan auteur Hakim Belabbes\, this haunting memory piece takes place in a small Moroccan town\, where residents go through cycles of loss and happiness\, coping with grief while life continues. Connected by family\, friendship\, and community\, they both support and hurt each other through weddings\, funerals\, love\, and forgiveness. As the living strive for hope and connection\, the spirits of the dead remain close\, watching over their loved ones.\n\nThe presentation features seven vignettes from *Collapsed Walls* (60 min). Following the film\, Belabbes will be in conversation with Said Hannouchi\, Director of the U-M Arabic Language Program. Q & A to follow.\n\nRelated event: Tea with Hakim Belabbes at Mynt House Cafe. More details at https://myumi.ch/jJDPV.\n\n*About Hakim Belabbes*\nHakim Belabbes was born in the Moroccan town of Boujad\, where his father owned the only movie theatre. He earned a BA in American and African literature in 1983 from Mohamed V University in Rabat\, Morocco\, and an MFA in film and video from Columbia College in Chicago\, where he is an adjunct professor in film direction and production. He is also the director of The Higher Institute of Audio-Visual Professions and Cinema in Rabat. \n\n*About Said Hannouchi*\nSaid Hannouchi is the director of the Arabic Language Program at the University of Michigan. He earned a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2017. His research focuses on Arabic language learners’ intercultural communicative competence and intercultural identity development via study abroad experiences. Additional areas of interest include language policy in multilingual contexts and language education in Morocco and North Africa.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Data & AI in Society Lecture Series | Energy Optimal AI
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nAI is becoming an integral part of our lives—helping with everything from drafting emails to diagnosing diseases. But behind the scenes\, AI tools consume massive amounts of electricity. Training just one large AI model can use as much energy as thousands of U.S. homes do in a year. And as AI adoption grows\, so does its appetite for power.\n\nThis surge in energy demand drives up operational costs\, puts pressure on already-congested power infrastructure\, and makes it harder to bring AI to places without reliable electricity. These barriers are becoming major bottlenecks for deploying and scaling AI systems.\n\nThrough the ML Energy Initiative\, we’re working to address these challenges. We’ve built tools to measure energy use\, reduce waste\, and design AI systems that are more efficient—without sacrificing the accuracy of AI models. In this talk\, I’ll share how smarter energy use can make AI more affordable and accessible.\n\nMeet Mosharaf Chowdhury:\nMosharaf Chowdhury is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, where he leads the SymbioticLab. His research focuses on making AI/ML workloads more efficient\, with a particular emphasis on reducing their energy consumption through the ML Energy Initiative. Major open-source projects from his team include Infiniswap\, the first scalable memory disaggregation solution\; FedScale\, a planetary-scale AI/ML platform\; TPP\, a tiered memory manager integrated into the Linux kernel (v5.18+)\; and Zeus\, the first energy-optimal generative AI stack. Previously\, Mosharaf invented the concept of coflows and was one of the original creators of Apache Spark. He has received numerous individual honors\, including fellowships and paper awards from NSDI\, OSDI\, ATC\, and MICRO.
