SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Peter Miksza: \"The Art and Science of Practice: Skill Acquisition\, Self-Regulation\, and Expertise in Music\"
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Music Education hosts guest scholar Peter Miksza as part of the Carrigan Lecture Series. Free and open to the public.\n\nFor music educators\, a key aspiration is helping developing musicians stand on their own as learners. A key step in this process is teaching them how to practice\, enabling them to act as their own instructors. Although the goal is clear\, the path toward it can be complex. Grounded in research\, this session will draw on psychological theories to illuminate the factors that shape effective practice. Studies on practice\, motivation\, and learning will be explored to show how research helps explain musical skill development. Evidence-based strategies for fostering self-regulated practice will be introduced.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n\nPETER MIKSZA is Professor of Music Education and Chair of the Music Education Department at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He co-directs the IU Music and Mind Lab and researches psychological and social dimensions of musical skill\, teacher preparation\, and music education policy. Widely published and active internationally\, he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses\, advises research projects\, and serves as Editor of the Journal of Research in Music Education. Miksza previously taught in New Jersey and at the University of Colorado.

SUMMARY:Performance:Bob Schneider & Rhett Miller
DESCRIPTION:Austin\, Texas-based singer-songwriter and former frontman of The Ugly Americans and The Scabs\, Bob Schneider is one of the most-celebrated musicians in the live music capital. Combining diverse styles\, Schneider's music spans genres\, blending elements of folk\, rock\, rap\, funk\, bluegrass\, reggae and country with the more traditional singer/songwriter aesthetic. In short\, FRUNK. Schneider draws inspiration from the '70s with a modern twist. His lyrics\, both playful and powerful\, tackle tough subjects about alienation\, addiction\, and lost romance.\n\nSchneider has won more than 59 Austin Music Awards including Best Album\, Best Songwriter\, Best Musician\, and Best Male Vocals making him the most decorated artist in Austin music history. He has released more than a dozen albums (with a new one on the way). He has also written over 1\,000 songs\, is a published author and an avid painter and collage artist. He does all this while playing over a hundred shows a year and he doesn't plan on slowing down anytime soon.\n\nTexas native Rhett Miller is perhaps best known as the frontman of the Dallas-based alt-country band the Old 97's\, although he has also pursued a critically acclaimed solo career. Strictly speaking\, Miller launched his own career before the Old 97's were formed. He recorded his first solo album\, a series of acoustic folk songs entitled Mythologies\, in 1989. Future Old 97's bassist (and a solid songwriter in his own right) Murry Hammond produced the album\, and their partnership later blossomed into a full-fledged band. \n\nIn 2018 Miller released his seventh solo record\, The Messenger\, on ATO records.\n\nIn addition to his songwriting\, Miller has also written short stories\, essays\, and articles that have appeared in Rolling Stone\, Salon\, The Atlantic\, and McSweeney’s.
