DESCRIPTION:Title: Rational Introjection \n\nAbstract: Michael Strevens coined the term ‘introjection’ for the kind of psychological process that\, in humans\, is normally responsible for the acquisition of new conceptual mental representations. This talk will work toward a theory of the (epistemic) rationality constraints that govern introjection. I will first argue that the discredited ‘definitional’ theory of introjection is a better rational theory of introjection than is usually supposed\, and that it is not superseded by recent Quinean approaches (e.g.\, Carey\, Margolis\, Strevens).  I will then propose a variant of the definitional theory\, the ‘referential theory’\, that avoids the main problem for the definitional approach. I end by considering why referential introjection may be a more successful cognitive strategy than non-referential definitional introjection. \n\nAbout Professor Gómez Sánchez:\nVerónica Gómez Sánchez is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at UC Berkeley. Her main research interests are in the metaphysics of science and philosophy of cognitive science. The overarching goal of her current research is to understand how the properties and laws of the special sciences (especially cognitive science) fit into the physical world. She has a special interest in the nature of mental representation and its role in scientific explanation. Verónica got her PhD in Philosophy from Rutgers University and my BA from Universidad de los Andes. Before coming to Berkeley\, she was a Bersoff Faculty Fellow at NYU.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Title: Quantum Gravity in Near-Extremal Black Holes
DESCRIPTION:Recent developments have revealed that black holes near extremality exhibit large quantum fluctuations in their geometry\, marking a controllable breakdown of semiclassical quantum field theory in curved spacetime. In this talk\, I will discuss how these fluctuations can be revealed through scattering waves off the black hole. In particular\, we find that extremely cold black holes become transparent to low-frequency light or gravitational radiation. These effects provide concrete signatures of quantum gravity at play in near-extremal regimes.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Monomial identities in the Weyl algebra (Combinatorics Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:The (Heisenberg) Weyl algebra is the free algebra with two generators D and U and single relation DU−UD = 1.  As a consequence of this relation\, certain monomials are equal\, such as DUUD and UDDU. We characterize all such equalities over a field of characteristic 0\, describing them in several ways\, including operationally (by a combinatorial  equivalence relation generated by certain moves) and computationally (through lattice path invariants).  We also enumerate the equivalence classes and several variants thereof and discuss possible extensions to other algebras.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Jida Wang
DESCRIPTION:Lakes and reservoirs store the largest mass of liquid water on the land surface. They provide diverse and complex aquatic ecosystems\, unique aesthetic appeal\, and readily accessible freshwater sources to societal use. Although considered “lentic” (hydrologically stationary)\, lakes are often highly dynamic and are an integrated component of the global drainage system. They interact with river discharge\, groundwater fluxes\, and glacial mass balances\, and function as both “sentinels” and “regulators” of climatic and environmental changes. A substantial proportion of the global lakes are also manmade reservoirs\, which regulate natural streamflow and affect downstream water supply and sediment regimes. Tracking the dynamics of lake water storage is fundamental to understanding the spatiotemporal disparity in global freshwater resources\, which is essential for addressing the increasing challenge in water security during the Anthropocene.\n\nThis seminar will provide a global perspective on the abundance and recent (decadal-scale) changes of lake water resources\, as well as their implications to catchment hydrology\, lacustrine management\, and broader societal impacts. The seminar will identify the latest advances in data infrastructure for global lake monitoring\, and will discuss the importance and challenges of data and method synergy from multi-mission Earth-observing satellites\, including the newly launched Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission. The recent global lake dynamics will be attributed to primary driving mechanisms including anthropogenic climate change\, climate variability\, and direct human water consumption and managements. Hotspots such as arid hinterlands and High Mountain Asia will be highlighted to further illustrate the essential roles of lake water resources for regional water security and a holistic understanding of the global hydrological cycle under climate change.
