SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Teaching in Tumultuous Times: Post Election Edition
DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled from 1/30/2025\n\nWe continue to live in unprecedented times with heightened anxiety and stress in regards to many issues: the crisis in the Middle East and concurrent debates about antisemitism and Islamophobia/anti-Palestinian politics on college campuses\, continued anti-Black policies & systemic racism\, anti-queer and anti-trans policies\, financial crises\, the ongoing challenges arising from the COVID-19 pandemic\, and a contentious political climate as we enter the tail end of the 2024 electoral season\, among others. Students report feeling alienated\, or confused\, when instructors in their courses do not acknowledge such unsettling events\, locally\, nationally\, and globally. As instructors\, we make decisions whether\, when\, and how\, to address such events with our students. This interactive in-person workshop provides an opportunity for instructors to think together and work through strategies for engaging with students in the classroom about emerging events on campus and beyond. \n\nThis session is offered as part of the Promoting Democracy Teaching Series\, co-sponsored by CRLT and Ginsberg Center.\n\nOpen to UM faculty\, graduate students/GSIs and post-docs. If you are UM staff with instructional responsibilities who would like to register\, please reach out to teachdemocracy@umich.edu\n\nRegister Here: https://events.blackthorn.io/en/Hn1RKit7/g/2kTsKXAV0p/teaching-in-tumultuous-times-post-election-edition-5a1oHn4l1fv/overview

SUMMARY:Performance:Adam Lenhart\, carillon
DESCRIPTION:Undergraduate student Adam Lenhart performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds. As part of Lenhart's American Women Concert Series\, this recital program celebrates the life\, legacy & music of Lesley Gore (1946-2015).\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Colorism Multimedia Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Colorism comprises works of video\, still photography\, and sculpture questioning our psychosocial and biological ideas about skin color and treatment of people\, based on skin tones\, including within racial groups. This exhibit asks: What do we know about the root causes of prejudice toward skin color? What can we do to improve interpersonal and structural colorism? To answer these questions\, Prof. Rogério Pinto (Social Work) uses personal and historical materials and interview data to optimize audience interaction\, including critical dialogues around colorism while audiences are viewing the installation or immediately after viewing it.
