SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Black Brilliance: Navigating Identity and Professional Excellence
DESCRIPTION:Black Brilliance welcomes all students interested in learning and engaging with a space created to explore the intersections of professional development and Black experiences. By centering Black identities and amplifying the voices and stories of those navigating systemic barriers in professional spaces\, we prioritize the perspectives of Black individuals. Our goal is to empower participants with resources that promote equity and representation. Students will have an opportunity to engage with Black LSA and UCC alum mentors\, peer-to-peer mentors\, and career services staff from the LSA Opportunity Hub and the University Career Center. Learn how to access internship funding\, participate in interactive financial education topics\, engage with financial aid staff\, and other professional development resources. Attendees are also encouraged to interact with the UCC Clothes Closet or take professional headshots. Through engaging in community-driven conversations\, we celebrate resilience\, uplift diverse narratives\, and advocate for justice in professional growth and beyond.\nEVENT SCHEDULE:\nSession 1: Welcome & Career Resources [LSA Atrium]2:30 - 3:00 PM: Introduction & Internship Funding3:00 - 3:30 PM: Financial Education Presentation\nSession 2: 3:30 - 4:45 PM: Mix & Mingle [Multiple locations]Speak with Career Coaches [LSA Opportunity Hub and UCC]Check out the UCC Clothes Closet [SAB\, 3rd floor]Use the Professional Headshot Booth [LSA OR UCC]Visit the Office of Financial Education [SAB\, 2nd floor]\nSession. 3: Alumni Fellowship [LSA Multipurpose Room]5:00 - 6:30 PM: Alumni Mix & Mingle (dinner provided)\n\nBlack Brilliance: Navigating Identity and Professional Excellence is brought to you through collaboration of the LSA Opportunity Hub\, University Career Center\, Office of Financial Education\, and Support for Incoming Black Students (SIBS). \n\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please indicate your accommodation requirements. The LSA Opportunity Hub aims to deliver inclusive and accessible experiences for all students. This event is on the first floor of a wheelchair-accessible building\, including wheelchair-accessible restrooms on the first floor\, a gender-inclusive and accessible restroom on the first floor\, places to sit or stand during the event\, wheelchair-accessible elevators\, and accessible parking options nearby on Maynard Street. Ramps are located at the East entrance (from State St.) and the Northwest entrance (from Maynard). Power doors are located at the Northwest entrance. We will be using microphones for all speakers and participant questions and automated closed captions (although imperfect) will be generated through google slides which also include alt text for screen readers. To request additional accommodations\, please contact LSA Hub Events at lsa.hubevents@umich.edu. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Presentation:Combinatorial Methods in Mixed Characteristic: The Theory of t-Monomials
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nThis thesis introduces a framework for defining new classes of rings analogous to various well-studied combinatorial algebras over a field. Given a discrete valuation ring (V\, t)\, the polynomial ring V[x1\, ... \, xn] is zn-graded by multidegree in the variables\, and up to multi-plication by a unit the homogeneous elements are of the form tm0x7{1'1... x\;\;in. We call these elements t-monomials. Likewise\, the Laurent polynomial ring L[xf1\, ... \, x\;1] over the frac- tion field L of V is a zn-graded V-algebra whose homogeneous elements are t-monomials\, up to a unit in V. We define t-Stanley-Reisner rings\, t-semigroup rings\, and t-toric face rings by replacing monomials with t-monomials in the definitions of Stanley-Reisner rings\, semigroup rings\, and toric face rings\, respectively.\n\nEvaluation at t induces an algebraically well-behaved bijection between t-monomials and monomials in one extra variable\; we exploit this bijection to prove results about our new ring classes by comparison to the original versions. This technique is particularly useful to study open questions which are known for equicharacteristic. As a case study\, we demonstrate that the Q-Sequence Conjecture of Hochster and Zhang (proven in equicharacteristic by Hochster and Huneke) holds for all three of these new ring classes.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Webinar: Voices of the Past\, Planning for the Future: Coastal Resilience and Cultural Preservation in the Apalachicola System
DESCRIPTION:Nestled along Florida’s northern Gulf Coast\, the Apalachicola River and Bay system is a landscape rich in both natural and cultural heritage. For over 12\,000 years\, this region has supported diverse ecosystems and communities\, from Indigenous groups to early industries like cotton\, timber\, and fishing. The area now faces mounting challenges\, however: the impacts of climate and the subsequent loss of historical sites threaten the preservation of these communities’ stories. Ranking as one of Florida’s most under-resourced areas\, there is an urgent need to document and preserve the region’s heritage while fostering connections with its current residents.\n\nThis webinar will spotlight the \"People of the Apalachicola System\" project\, which combines archaeological research\, digital modeling\, and innovative community engagement to understand and protect the area’s cultural landscape within the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve. Participants will learn about the project’s approach\, including methods for engaging local voices through workshops and surveys\, as well as how these efforts address threats to heritage resources. The webinar will also share preliminary findings\, highlight effective strategies for fostering collaboration\, and explore how these lessons can guide future preservation and education initiatives in similar at-risk areas. Join the session to discover how heritage and community are coming together to protect the stories of Apalachicola’s past and shape its future!
