SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Looking for Women\, Finding Jehanne: Gender and Justice in Late Medieval Dijon
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will share some of the findings from Sara's forthcoming book\, tentatively titled Justice for Jehanne\, Survival Stories from Late Medieval France. Written as a police procedural\, it is also a medieval iteration of the timeless tale of a migrant woman from the countryside who struggled to survive in the big city\, in this case Dijon towards the end of the Middle Ages. At that particular time\, in the second half of the fifteenth century\, in the midst of warfare\, endemic disease\, and political upheaval\, Dijon's municipal authorities investigated all manner of crime and other wrongdoing. Women appeared in these investigations most often as victims or as witnesses\, but also as accused of theft\, violence\, sex crimes\, insults\, and sorcery. Sara's presentation offers an investigation of another kind\, one that asks what we can learn from these legal documents about this one woman’s life\, but also about the interworkings of gender\, religion\, and justice in late medieval society.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:When Resources Meet Relationships: The Returns to Personalized Supports for Low-Income Students
DESCRIPTION:Children from low-income families face persistent educational and economic disadvantages that contribute to long-run earnings gaps. This paper studies Communities in Schools (CIS)\, a program that places coordinators in high-poverty schools to connect struggling students with individualized support. CIS is the largest program of its kind in the U.S.\, serving nearly 2 million students annually. We find that CIS improves test scores\, attendance\, and behavior for struggling students\, and that these gains persist\, leading to higher rates of high school graduation\, college attendance\, and adult earnings. These long-run effects can be closely forecast from changes in short-run outcomes\, with non-cognitive measures playing a central role. CIS delivers returns that compare favorably to other major education interventions\, such as class-size reductions. Our results suggest that programs like CIS—combining traditional school resources with mentorship and social capital—can produce lasting improvements in education and economic mobility for disadvantaged students.

DESCRIPTION:The Department of Voice & Opera hosts a guest artist master class with operatic lead and concert soloist Joshua Hopkins\, baritone. To begin the class\, Joshua will offer a Q&A about a piece he commissioned called *Songs for Murdered Sisters* by Jake Heggie and Margaret Atwood\, ahead of his performance of the piece with the University Philharmonia Orchestra on November 19. \n\nThis master class is partially funded by the Jessye Norman Master Class Series Fund. Free and open to the public.\n\nABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST\n\nWidely respected as one of the finest singer-actors of his generation\, JUNO Award-winning and Grammy-nominated Canadian baritone JOSHUA HOPKINS brings his “glistening\, malleable baritone of exceptional beauty” (*Opera Today*) to a repertoire spanning four centuries. His versatile artistry is frequently on display on the stages of The Metropolitan Opera\, Lyric Opera of Chicago\, San Francisco Opera\, Santa Fe Opera\, Semperoper Dresden\, Washington National Opera\, and the Canadian Opera Company.
