Join our information session tolearn more about how you can tackle real challenges facing your communityand jumpstart your career in public health with the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD). NACDD is a national public health non-profit agency focused on the health of the public by strengthening stateand national leadership and expertise for chronic disease prevention and control. In this session\, the NACDD PHA team will provide an overview of the program\, discuss how to become a Service Member\, highlight existing Service Members’ experiences\, and create a space for questions and answers. To enhance public health resources across the country and support state and local public health settings respond to and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic\, the Public Health AmeriCorps (PHA) program supports the recruitment\, training\, and development of the next generation of public health leaders. In partnership with a State Health Department or similar agency\, local health department(s) or other community-based organization(s)\, and/or a local YMCA or YMCA State Alliance\, Service Members will be placed across fifteen states to advance existing efforts around food and nutrition security\, safe physical activity access\, social connectedness\, and health equity\, all within the context of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.\n\nPlease note we are specifically recruiting applicants to serve in Alaska\, Illinois\, Iowa\, Kansas\, Louisiana\, Minnesota\, Missouri\, Nevada\, New Jersey\, and South Carolina. \n\nThis is your last chance to apply to the NACDD Public Health AmeriCorps Program in 2024! SUMMARY:Presentation:CCAT Research Review — Traffic Signal Optimization with Low Penetration Rate Vehicle Trajectory Data
DESCRIPTION:Traffic light optimization is known to be a cost-effective method for reducing congestion and energy consumption in urban areas without changing physical road infrastructure. However\, due to the high installation and maintenance costs of vehicle detectors\, most intersections are controlled by fixed-time traffic signals that are not regularly optimized. To alleviate traffic congestion at intersections\, Dr. Liu’s team presents a large-scale traffic signal re-timing system that uses a small percentage of vehicle trajectories as the only input without reliance on any detectors. A probabilistic time-space diagram has been developed\, which establishes the connection between a stochastic point-queue model and vehicle trajectories under the proposed Newellian coordinates. This model enables the team to reconstruct the recurrent spatial-temporal traffic state by aggregating sufficient historical data. Optimization algorithms are then developed to update traffic signal parameters for intersections with optimality gaps. A real-world citywide test of the system was conducted in Birmingham\, MI\, and demonstrated that it decreased the delay and number of stops at signalized intersections by up to 20% and 30%\, respectively. This system provides a scalable\, sustainable\, and efficient solution to traffic light optimization and can potentially be applied to every fixed-time signalized intersection in the world.\n---\nAbout the speaker: Dr. Henry Liu is the Bruce D. Greenshields Collegiate Professor of Engineering and the Director of Mcity at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. He is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering\, a Professor of Mechanical Engineering\, and a Research Professor at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. He also directs the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation\, a USDOT-funded regional university transportation center. Dr. Liu conducts interdisciplinary research at the interface of transportation engineering\, automotive engineering\, and artificial intelligence. He is recognized for his foundational work in cyber-physical transportation systems\, particularly on the development of smart traffic signal systems with connected vehicles\, and testing/evaluation of autonomous vehicles. He has published more than 140 refereed journal articles. His work on safety validation of autonomous vehicles has been published in Nature and featured as the cover story. He has also appeared on a number of media outlets including Wall Street Journal\, Forbes\, Science Daily\, Tech Xplore\, CNBC\, WXYZ\, etc. for transportation innovations. Prof. Liu is the managing editor of the Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems and a board member of the ITS America and IEEE ITS Society.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Student Dissertation Defense - Interactions Between Viruses\, Bacterial Hosts\, and their Environment
DESCRIPTION:Morgan Lindback\, EEB PhD student\, presents their dissertation defense.\nAbstract:\n“In every blink of an eye (0.3 seconds)\, the number of viral infections in the ocean (3 x 10^22) equals the number of stars in the universe” (Breitbart et al 2018). With such high frequency and magnitude\, viral infections of bacteria in the oceans have ecosystem-level impacts on ocean biogeochemical cycling and population-level impacts on whole microbial communities. I combine laboratory experiments (nanoSIMS and 'omics) and computational approaches (metagenomics) to understand the interactions between these viral infections and their environment.
