SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Number Theory: An Introduction to Perfectoid Theory
DESCRIPTION:Nearly fifteen years ago\, Peter Scholze introduced perfectoid fields\, establishing a bridge between deeply ramified fields of characteristic zero and characteristic (p). Perfectoid theory has since found important applications in arithmetic geometry. In this talk\, I will follow Scholze’s original paper to give an introduction to perfectoid fields and\, if time permits\, perfectoid spaces.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Entropy-Regularized Finite-State Mean Field Control Problems
DESCRIPTION:We study an infinite-horizon discounted mean field control problem for finite-state nonlinear continuous-time Markov chains. Controls are locally integrable transition-rate matrices and are penalized by relative entropy with respect to a state-dependent reference generator. We prove that the value function is the unique bounded viscosity solution on the closed simplex of the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation by a direct dynamic-programming argument and a finite-state comparison principle. Under a uniform semiconvexity condition and C¹\,¹ regularity\, the value function is globally semiconvex and intrinsically C¹\,¹ on the closed simplex and yields a Gibbs feedback that is the unique Hamiltonian minimizer at interior states. For positive\, symmetric\, possibly state-dependent reference rates\, an entropy-plus-value free energy decays globally exponentially when the temperature parameter is compatible with the semiconvexity modulus. We also establish a discounted planner-to-game correspondence for potential mean field games under a state-independent reference generator.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student DGT: Dehn Surgery Number
DESCRIPTION:Dehn surgery is one of the most basic operations in the study of low dimensional topology that allows us to produce new manifolds. In this talk we will sketch a variety of results concerning Dehn surgery ranging from classical to current research level results. This talk will be accessible to first year graduate students.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Life Coaching Circles
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual Coaching Cirlces!  Each coaching session will provide 8-10 staff members with an opportunity to interact informally with a Student Life Unit Director (or leader) around a leadership topic of interest to them. These are informal conversations (rather than workshops or presentations) between staff and these leaders who have experience with and willingness to share their wisdom around these topics.Staff are asked to register for no more than one coaching circle a semester. Space is very limited\, register today!

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2026 Ta-You Wu Lecture in Physics | From Prehistoric Qubits to Building a Useful Quantum Computer
DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid lecture. Join us in person at Rackham Amphitheatre (4th Floor) or via livestream: https://myumi.ch/d8Q7X\n\nIn the span of four decades\, quantum computation has evolved from an intellectual curiosity to a potentially realizable technology. I will describe my thesis work on macroscopic quantum tunneling and energy-level quantization that led to the Nobel Prize\, as well as several other important experiments that advanced superconducting qubits. Nevertheless\, the path toward a full-stack scalable technology is a work in progress. There are significant outstanding quantum hardware\, fabrication\, architecture\, and algorithmic challenges that must be solved. Here\, we show how the road to scaling could be paved by adopting existing semiconductor technology to build much higher-quality qubits and employing system engineering approaches.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AI Clinic Lab | Navigating Technological Shifts: Build\, Adapt\, and Drive the Next Era of Tech (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an AMA with Tarun Bhatnagar\n\nWe strongly encourage local attendees to attend in-person.\n\n---------\n\nTechnological disruption isn't new—and historically\, every major inflection point has opened up bigger opportunities for technology and information students. Join University of Michigan Computer Engineering alum and Chicago Booth MBA product leader for an honest conversation on navigating career shifts in a changing landscape. Drawing from three decades of building global platforms—from scaling Google Maps to launching modern FinTech infrastructure—he’ll break down how information roles are moving toward versatile generalists\, why sharp critical thinking and resilience matter more than any single tool\, and where the most exciting new roles are emerging. Bring your questions on product strategy\, technological disruption\, and what it takes to persevere through industry change.
