SUMMARY:Performance:Jenna Moon & Mitty Ma\, carillon
DESCRIPTION:SMTD doctoral alumna Jenna Moon & Graduate student Mitty Ma perform on the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Unpacking an Employment-Wage Puzzle: Ban-the-Box Hiring Policies\, Sorting\, & Job Quality for those with and without Criminal Records
DESCRIPTION:Outside of specific contexts\, such as technology policy or international business\, management scholars’ engagement with research on policy efficacy* is inconsistent\, even when policies have direct implications for organizations and organizational members. Traditionally\, we have been more likely to exploit policy changes for research design purposes rather than directly examine policy efficacy. In this preliminary research\, we examine the Ban-the-Box (BTB) policy\, which\, similar to many policies\, may have unintended consequences for the employers and potential employees that it was designed to influence. At the same time\, research on BTB's efficacy is mixed\, with the most convincing research suggesting that policymakers should be wary of the policy's effect. We replicate findings that point to an unintended consequence but then take steps to unpack geographic variance in the effect of BTB. This variance points to a need to better appreciate how regional differences in structural factors (such as residential segregation) affect whether BTB is successful. We then propose some next steps to advance this early-stage research\, and offer our thoughts on how our work has the potential to serve as a model for management scholars who work on topics with policy implications.

SUMMARY:Other:Disability Identity: Small Group Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Whether you were born with a disability\, acquired a disability\, or received a diagnosis that revealed why you encounter certain barriers in life—living with disability can be a turbulent experience mentally and emotionally. There are challenges to navigate at work\, in your home life\, and in your ties to community. There are also opportunities for personal growth\, new connections\, and joy.\n\nThe LSA Disability Navigators are facilitating small group discussions for LSA employees (faculty and staff\, including student workers) who want space to process their experiences and seek advice from a group of peers who also live with disability.\n\nParticipants will:\n- Learn about the 7 stages of disability acceptance.\n- Explore how to incorporate disability into your identity in a healthy way.\n- Receive coaching on the disclosure process and how to foster a support network.\n- Crowdsource resources and advice for navigating work and life with a disability.\n\nFormat: This discussion group will be conducted virtually on Zoom. Camera use will be optional\, but is encouraged. Auto-captioning will be enabled and slides will be shared during and following the workshop. Participants can participate verbally by unmuting or in writing via the chat function. This session will not be recorded.\n\nAccommodations: The LSA DEI Office greatly values inclusion and access for all. We are pleased to provide reasonable accommodations to enable your full participation in this workshop. Please contact LSA.Disability.Navigators@umich.edu if you would like to request disability accommodations or have questions about access needs.\n\nParticipant Privacy: Disclosure of disability is not required or expected to participate. SUMMARY:Other:Ecological Restoration Club Stewardship Day
DESCRIPTION:Join the Ecological Restoration Club at Matthaei Botanical Gardens in transplanting native plant seedlings. MBGNA grows native plants as part of their ecological restoration and education efforts. The native plants support a highly diverse group of invertebrates (bees\, butterflies\, moths\, beetles\, leafhoppers\, etc.)\, which in turn provide food for many other species. The native plants add beauty to our world while also helping to reduce soil erosion and increase soil fertility\, aeration\, and water infiltration.
